Mitchell was appointed Post Master of Rose Hill on November 3, 1859. He served one year. He is my husband's maternal great-grandfather through his daughter, Catherine Mitchell. Matilda (Mattie) Tabitha (surname?) was his wife. (Catherine and her brother Thomas Albert Mitchell were Cherokee (family lore??) children adopted by JC Mitchell. We believe he and Mattie had one child together, Thomas Jefferson Mitchell. The 2 adopted children may have been JCs by a Cherokee wife or Thomas Jefferson's by a Cherokee wife.) We have no proof of any of this part. He was also a Baptist circuit rider. He had a pastorship at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Holmes County, Fl in the 1880s. Hope this helps.
