Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RS.2ADI/1499.1.1.1 Message Board Post: As I recall, the old section in to your left as you come in the gate which is evident because of the large cedar trees and old burials. I checked with the local funeral home who has a map of the newer burials but little on the old section. Basically you have to walk the rows and look which takes a while. Ore says there was a large cedar on each corner of the old church building. You are correct in that there are quite a few unmarked graves in this area. In many cases markers, coping, etc appears to have been added more recently. I have debated contacting the present day church to see if they have more information. I have included a lore citation from my file--hope its helpful. (The Lassiter family moved to the Children’s Home Community in Walton County on the Florida and Alabama line. James was a Baptist minister and friends and family members erected a small church on land that is now Greenwood Cemetery in Florala, Covington, Alabama. The cemetery is actuall! y just across the state line in Florida. Sisters and brothers of James planted small cedar trees at each corner of the church building. These trees are large now and the only remnants of a once active church. James' parents are buried near this site. In 1980 Corbin Presley and Louise Cox collected money from descendants of John and Nancy for a headstone to mark their graves.) (John Jackson Lassiter and Nancy Prescoat (Prescott) are buried where the old church building stood so many years ago (Greenwood Cemetery , Florala, Alabama) and where many of our kin are buried, those who worshipped god in that same log church. There are some large cedar trees that Irene Nelson told me the sisters and brothers of Jim (James Benjamin) Lassiter set out when the trees were small and the church was new. Most of the graves are unmarked. Louise Cox of Laurel Hill got some of the older members of the clan to donate enough money to erect stones for John and Nancy. I was one of the youn! ger clan lucky enough to contribute a small amount in my mother's name . I don't know how many of Jim's brothers and sisters he married (Officiated at the wedding), but I think most of them. It appears he was a well respected man of the community. These Lassiter’s lived in what was once a thriving place called Children's Home Community. Jim's daughter Martha moved to Texas and there she died, )

I was wondering about the location of the church since it did mention that it was later reubilt in the town of Florala and that the original church was built on the state line where the Greenwood cemetery now lies. Wilson J. Kierce actually lived at Natural Bridge in Walton County, Florida not far from the state line. Have you been to that cemetery? Is it easy to find? I have seen an online listing of burials there but nothing dated back that far. You saw there is an "old" section where the church used to be. Any idea if there is a list of those burials as well? I would hate to show up and not find his grave since it is probably not marked. Vanessa burzynsk@swbell.net

Hi list members, we are researching mulatto families in Covington County, Alabama. We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married. We descend from the JACKSON surname. Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most ³Jackson¹s² continued to live in Covington well into the late 1930¹s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Ohio. We would love to correspond with others that are researching mulatto families from these areas with the surnames below. Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest. Supposedly my ggg-grandfather Wilson J. Kierce is buried there according to a 1917 Newspaper article (see below). If anyone has any first hand knowledge of the history of this church and whether or not anyone is buried there, please contact me. I am planning a trip there in March. I have his confederate grave marker and I need to find out where he is buried. Thanks! Florala News-Democrat Thursday, June 21, 1917 History of the Baptist Church What is known as the First Baptist Church, Florala, was organized in 1862, over in Florida near the forks of the creek, where Clear Springs School house now stands. The organization was effected by Bro. G.W. Kierce, the first pastor, who now lives at Andalusia. Bro. Kierce was then missionary for this Association, and served the church once a month for several years. About 1864 the place of worship was moved to a round-pole school house near where the Iris Theatre now stands. In this school house our fellow townsman, Mr. J. E. Hughes, lived the first year of his marriage. In 1869 Rev. Wilson Kierce, father of Rev. G.W. Kierce, came here with wagon and oxen, and together with Brother J.E. Hughes, D.C. Allen and others of the community, cut and hauled logs and erected a log building on the present site. Rev. Kierce requested that he be buried under the shade of the trees by the church, and there his body rests today. The following men have served as pastors, the approximate time being opposite the name of each: Rev. GW Kierce several years; Revs. F.L. Lloyd and J.B. Lassiter, each of whom supplied some years; Rev. Wilson Kierce began pastorate in 1870 and served several years; Rev. P.D. Bulger taught school and pastored the church several years. Bro. Bulger was succeeded by Rev. Mitchell, who served two or three years; Rev. EA Holley, time not known; Rev. Wiley F Martin, several years; Rev. W.F. Faulkner, one year; Rev. J.F. Gable, two years, Rev. S.H. Bennett, two years; Rev. B.S. Railey, five years; Rev. E.M. Steward, three months; Dr. J.S. Edmonds, eighteen months; Rev. J.F. Vandiver, three years; Rev. D.R. Parker, eighteen months, Rev. T.V. Shoemaker, the present pastor, one year.
