I'm searching for the "Parents" of both of my great-grandparents: John McCloud and Sarah Charity Roberts. .. race: caucasian Note: McCloud could had been spelled as McLeod or McLoud back then. John McCloud was born 1850 in GA or SC and died 1895 in Flomaton, AL.. buried at Brushy Creek Cemetery in Conecuh County AL. I'm not sure which state or the county where he was born, but would like to know! Sarah Charity Roberts (also called Sallie) was born 6-20-1852 in GA and died 9-25-1941 in Flomaton, AL.. buried at the Flomaton Cemetery.. her "birthplace" is also a question.. don't know what town nor county. And I have no idea what her Parent's names are.. just the last name Roberts. Sometime in my childhood, it seems like I've heard my mama say that Sallie was possibly from Jonesboro (Clayton County) GA. But, I can't be positive about this.. it was such a long time ago, and I was so young. But, it could be possible. I have also heard that Sarah (Sallie) remarried after John McCloud died, married a Henry Smith and lived in FL for awhile. I don't know anything else about this. She didn't have any children by him. I'm stumped for sure.. for there's nobody left to ask, that's old enough to remember, in my family. All the older folks have passed on. And everywhere I've checked, came up with nothing. I can't seem to find a match anywhere. I have really hit a brick wall!! ha! ha! I do have a list of John and Sarah's Children: 1. J. W. McCloud - b. 2-25-1878 - Headland, AL .. no date of death, but, I think he might have been buried at Brushy Creek Cemetery - Conecuh County AL. I don't think he ever married. I don't know what the J.W. stands for.. poss. John William?? 2. Rosalee McCloud - b. 8-13-1880 - Headland, AL .. no date of death, but was buried at Flomaton, AL cemetery .. she married: Warren Ashley Hammac - children: Claude, Roy, Coady, Della Mae, Ibra, and Myrtle 3. William Henry McCloud - b. 11-30-1882 - Headland, AL .. d. 12-19-1935 .. buried: Flomaton, AL .. he married: Rosa Mae Jones Children: Esco, and William H.,Jr 4. Marcus Pomeroy McCloud - b. 9-20-1884 - Headland, AL .. d. 6-8-1953 .. buried: Flomaton, AL .. his first marriage: Mary Jewell Conant .. his second marriage: Katherine Kuhl Halligan 5. Hattie Lida McCloud - b. 3-19-1887 - Headland, AL .. no date of death, but was buried in Mobile, AL .. her first marriage: first name unknown.. last name is Strength.. their son: Carney Strength .. 2nd husband: A.B. Davis .. not sure what the A.B. stands for.. could possibly be Albert B. cause they had a son named Albert Earle Davis. 6. Lili Jan McCloud - b. 2-10-1889 - Headland, AL .. no date of death, but I think she might have been buried at Brushy Creek Cemetery - Conecuh County, AL .. I'm thinking that this might be the child Lilly McCloud I've heard that was buried next to John McCloud. 7. Clinton McCloud - b. 6-14-1893 - Headland, AL .. d. 1935 .. buried: Flomaton, AL.. he never married.. he died an accidental death going home from the Service. Don't know the details.. but, wish I did know. Marcus Pomeroy McCloud was my Grandfather. He and my grandmother Mary Jewell Conant had three children: 1. Allen Jackson McCloud - b. 8-7-1922 .. AL or FL .. not sure which.. died: 2-18-2001 .. buried: Flomaton, AL 2. Myrtice Gwendolyn McCloud - b. 6-19-1925 .. AL or FL.. not sure which .. still living.. and has alzheimers.. no help from her. 3. Mary Elizabeth McCloud - b. 2-28-1927 - Leesburg, FL .. d. 12-10-1992 - Long Beach, CA - this was my mother Marcus and Mary Jewell divorced and then he married: Katherine Kuhl Halligan.. they had one child: Marcus Paul McCloud - b. 7-18-1937 - Flomaton AL or possibly Century,FL - died: 7-22-1937 Katherine Kuhl Halligan had a daughter by her first marriage: Mildred Halligan Mary Jewell remarried to: Josef I. Blanc and lived in Jacksonville, FL I sure would like to get past John McCloud and Sarah Charity (Sallie) Roberts. I would like know where they came from and who their parents were and where they're from. I'm hoping that there is somebody out there that can help me solve this mystery. If there's anybody out there that can help me, I sure would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you for your time and God bless you! Sincerely, Deborah Payton --- avast! Surnames: Hart, Hendrith and Jackson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RS.2ADI/1435.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Shana, yes, we corresponded a while ago regarding the Hendrith and Wall surnames. Perhaps I can be of more help this time. I recall reading information on two-slave owners with the Hart surname some time ago. They were Reubin Hart and his son Andrew J. Hart. They lived in the Conecuh River Township. I am not sure but believe they came from Florida before moving to Alabama. My great-great uncle married a woman named Rosie Montella Hart, born in Florida circa 1907. I do not know who her parents were however, I can possibly find out. After leaving Alabama, they relocated to Okaloosa and later Crest View, Florida. Several of my Jackson descendants and others from Covington County are known to have moved to the following areas: Baker, Panama City, Walton, Okaloosa, and Escambia. Sherry Johnston a Librarian at the Evergreen Public Library is knowledgeable about the history of the people from Covington and nearby counties; I recommend that you contact her. The following is her contact information: Evergreen Public Library, 251/578-2670 or fax at 251/578-2316. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. I found a marriage date for Sanford N. Johnson and Pastoria Hendrith, 01/25/1906. I do not know if there is a connection to your Hendriths. If I see others listed, I will let you know. I have a Detroit connection as well, one of my Jackson relatives moved there circa 1948 however it is unknown if he married or had children before he died. I have gotten some good leads through queries I have posted in Mansfield, Ohio. I believe Mansfield was big in the Steel industry and attracted many people from Covington County, Al looking for work. I recently viewed a Church calendar that lists its members birth dates anniversary dates, etc. To my amazement, these were most of the names I saw living in Covington from 1870s through the late 1930s. I will check for your surnames the next time I visit my grandmother. I hope this helps! Sharon

Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RS.2ADI/1548 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford. He was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He may have ended up at an orphanage or facility and at some point he was claimed and sent to live with a supposed “uncle.” This may have been in Florida. He questioned whether his claimer was a true uncle because he felt used as an indentured servant and this prompted him to run away with alleged “cousins.” He eventually migrated to Texas and the family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Have! ns on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. I found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name. The listing is: Hubbard, James D., age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie (nickname?), age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496, listing a William Wadferd. The listing is: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama, cannot write. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, Keeps house, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Single, Laborer, b. Alabama, cannot write. It appears 1880 William Wadferd is a boarder. As probably flawed as censuses were back then and despite the name spelling and age, this could be my g-grandfather and/or possibly Shelby County Willie Wadford. I also cannot locate any information on the Hammocks either. If you have any information or search suggestions, please contact me at NLCOMPTON@RMCI.NET
