    1. [ALCOVING] response to Cemetery restorations in Ala.
    2. Just to inform you that there is a very active effort in Alabama to restore the old cemeteries. It is the Old cemeteries preservation society. The librarian in Evergreen, Conecuh county is very active with this group, Sherry Johnson, she may be able to let you know if the cemetery that you are connected with is up for restoration, at least of all cleaning. She is actively trying to collect any and all information on various cemeteries, so many of them are forgotten or overgrown with vegation or destroyed by the lumbering companies as they forage through the overgrowth. She is able to get you connected with people in that area who might have written records, on mentions in family Bibles .....Burnt , Flooded and Hurricane damage has led many of us to Migraine headaches. We all are trying to restore any information on the citizens of Ala. through various records of any kind that might help us find our families. Please, continue to share your data that you know to be facts, even the oral histories of the families. So some day we will be able to find the information we need and make these people come to life again, not just a bunch of dates on a page. We will know how they came here, what they did to struggle in a land with nothing, to raise those large families, to educate them, survive Wars, famine, Yellow fever, Small Pox, and all the various aliments that no we longer have to fear. Be Proud of our heritage, and help to make them become more the data. I love History and crave for more knowledge in Genealogy, and wonder also about all these Children they have and wonder how they afford them all, since it is very expensive these days to have and support the Children. How they managed them back then. But someday somewhere I will uncover what I am looking for. Tina God Bless Thank you for the information I will look to see if your ppl are in Cody's tree. Her parents were John G. German from Morgan and Jersey County Illinois and Sallie B. Parker from Elba. Sallie B's parents were William R. Parker (who had a rather unsavory reputation up there)and Margaret Moore (daughter of Thomas Moore). Sallie and John were penpals somehow and had not met before he came to Alabama to marry her. The story is not real pretty and Sallie had a very hard life and died of cancer at 48 years old. I do not know how many years Sallie and John lived in Poley. His WW1 Registration was submitted from there and he said he worked for a lumber yard. So maybe he was a fireman at that lumber yard, ha ha. I just don't know. It is so hard doing genealogy in that area because of the floods. Most of the answers I have found have come from a very very nice third cousin in the area that I met on the Coffee County board. Thomas Moore was married to a woman named Wealthy Ann but I have been unable to find her maiden name. I would really like to find it because I am very interested in the mother, daughter, mother, daughter line and have lost it here. >From a woman's point of view, I find it very interesting the hardships our grandmothers went through and their perserverence in birthing large numbers of childen in a time where you couldn't expect them to live long lives. Many people in my own family think that none of this matters, that the people are long gone and who cares. But, for some reason, I care, and want to know more about them. I hope to write a family history and encourage my family to care too. Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Dear List member: Since there are lots of folks who read these emails, it is very helpful if you list names and dates with the msgs, such as Parker who married German. Parker who? When did she/he live? I have Parkers, but do not have a surname German. They are indeed from Elba. Can you offer more details? You visited a grave. You put up a new marker for one almost lost to elements. That is WONDERFUL, truly. Who was it? What did you put on the grave? Thanks for your additional details. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: seanest Surnames: Classification: cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.covington/3075.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Actually my relative has no other relatives in this cemetery. My grandmother Parker was from Elba and married a man named German. Most of their lives were spent in Illinois but they did live for a few years in Poley. The first three children were born in Illinois and this fourth child was born in Alabama. She seems to have died at 11 months old. It must have been heartbreaking to bury your child and move back to Illinois. My mother, who was later born to this couple in Illinois, is the sister of the child buried in Hickory Grove. On the childs birth certificate (Ethel Marie German) it says my grandfather was a fireman. I am wondering if that meant a fireman as we know it today or something else, like a fireman on a train. Any ideas, anyone? I realize that there is no money to fix up these cemeteries. I am reasonably sure I was the first Parker descendent in 90 years to visit this grave. If I lived there, I would do my best to help in whatever way I could, to see the cemeteries get some help. In some communities the boy scouts take on old cemeteries to earn badges, some are taken over by county administrations so they can be maintained. It would be great if genealogical societies could try a community campaign to get people interested. Even the well maintained cemeteries I have been to have their share of broken and overturned headstones. I think it is just a matter of people not caring a whole lot about this subject. And I must admit that before I started a genealogical study of my own family, I never thought about it either. Now, I would love to be able to help out. It is said that genealogy is the biggest hobby in the US so it puzzles me that we aren't doing more to save the old cemeteries. It was great that you responded to my post. I enjoy hearing from people who have the same concerns. By the way, we just loved Alabama. It was so different from my expectations. The rolling hills were very beautiful. Actually it was very like the part of Illinois I grew up in. Next year we hope to join the Parker reunion in Elba and will visit Hickory Grove to see the new monument I had installed. I did ask Lolley Monument if they could help getting a sign put on this cemetery and the unmarked one down the road. People studying genealogy quite often go to the counties where their ancestors lived, spending money and helping that economy. Perhaps that would be a reason for the county to spend the money on signs at the least. Thanks for your post. Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: seanest Surnames: Classification: cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.covington/3075/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just to let everyone know, we visited Hickory Grove Cemetery near Opp this month. We had a difficult time finding it, not because of it's location, but because there was no sign. The name of the church has changed and there was nothing to indicate where we were. We also visited a cemetery down the road from this one without a name. Finally, however, we found the grave. It had a small stone set in the ground and I probably would not have found it except for the internet list I had. This list was invaluable in that it listed the graves on each side and they had larger stones. After arriving back in Florida, I called LOLLEY MEMORIAL, down the street from the cemetery and ordered a new, above ground, small headstone, that gave more family information on it. This company was very nice to deal with and gave great customer service. Yesterday, I received in the mail, a picture of the new tombstone as it is now placed on the grave. That old stone had been there for 90 years! but I was afraid it would disappear into the ground with dirt and grass covering it. We really enjoyed our visit to Covington County and hope to return again. Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Anne Herbert Feathers is at the Alabama Historical Association. Thank you kindly for your help. See email below here. You all take care now..... Phyllis J. K. Owens Anne Feathers at Alabama Historical Association sent a letter It reads: As a way of collecting stories and legends about Alabama Courthouses for a talk to the Alabama Historical Association at the 2008 annual meeting, I am writing to local historical associations with the hopes that their members might have information about such lore associated with the courthouses in their counties. I hope you can help me. I am aware that courthouses in your county (Coffee) burned in 1851 and again in 1863 and am especilly interested in an facts, rumors. or other information about the fires. Many stories have grown up about barious courthouse burnings around the state, and I would like to include some of them in my talk. Certainly, if there are any such stories about Coffee County, I would like to include them. Also, any other stories or unusual features that you know about your current or former couthouses would be apperciated. If you can help me, please include sources for your stories. I am using many unverifiable tales (myths. so to speak) but at least would like to credit the person who told the story to me. Since the legth of my talk is limited, each narrative must necessarily be brief. If you know others who might be able to help, please pass this to them also. I certainly don't want to leave out a good story about a Coffee County Courthouse! Thank you so much for helping me gather information on this project. I am looking forward to hearing frim you.
