    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Mitchell, McDade, Coleman Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RS.2ADI/243.372 Message Board Post: Jefferson C. Mitchell was appointed Post Master of Rose Hill on November 3, 1859. He served one year. He is my husband's maternal great-grandfather through his daughter, Catherine Mitchell. Matilda (Mattie) Tabitha (surname?) was his wife. (Catherine and her brother Thomas Albert Mitchell were Cherokee (family lore??) children adopted by JC Mitchell. We believe he and Mattie had one child together, Thomas Jefferson Mitchell. The 2 adopted children may have been JCs by a Cherokee wife or Thomas Jefferson's by a Cherokee wife.) We have no proof of any of this part. He was also a Baptist circuit rider. He had a pastorship at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Holmes County, Fl in the 1880s. Hope this helps.

    3. The history I was referring to is from "Memorial Record of Alabama", Vol. I, p. 765-766 Published by Brant & Fuller (1893) Madison, WI. I have no access to records in SC, NC, and AL unless they are on line. Another researcher gave me the name Rebecca Arnett born in NC and gave a date of marriage as 1804 in North Carolina. They named the first child John Arnett Taylor born October 20, 1806. Winnette --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Kathryn and Thomas Albert (Mitchell) were indeed Cherokee children adopted by JC and Mattie Mitchell. JC Mitchell was pastor of the New Prospect Baptist Church in Holmes County FL in 1880s and of the First Baptist Church in Florala. He was known in the family to be a Baptist circuit rider which meant he preached at various rural churches where permanent preachers were not assigned. Not only was Jefferson Mitchell postmaster at Rose Hill, but his daughter Kathryn Mitchell Coleman McDade was post mistress in Holmes County, FL later in her life.
