Kwanzaa is a uniquely African-American holiday that was conceived in the 1960s by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, a professor at the University of California. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the Kiswahili phrase Matunda Ya Kwanzaa which means "first fruits" and is used for seven days, each day designed around Nguzo Saba, or seven principles, based on African values.
