Rita, the book, The Heritage of Coosa County, Alabama has the following information: "Sheriff Goggans served as sheriff of Coosa County from 1911 - 1915.......................... Sheriff Goggans had the sad duty of having to hang a man - the only man ever legally hanged in Coosa County. The prisoner was Charlie White, convicted of murdering Dock Maxwell........................ Charlie stood in the window before his execution and addressed the crowd who had gathered to witness the hanging. He told them all that women and whiskey had put him were he was and appealed to the crowd to avoid sin and meet him in heaven. A relative on my mother's side told me that he was a 10 year old boy at the time, that he was there, and that Charlie White's words stayed with him more than any sermon he had ever heard in church. He was hung there for killing a man. I believe it was around 1915 in Rockford. I am searching the White, Morris, Dunnaway, and Butler families of Coosa County. I went to the courthouse there in Coosa County but no one there could help me find the records on Charlie White. If anyone can help me find this information i will be very grateful. I need information on when and where he was hung and where he was buried.
