Thanks to you, I have been able to find Alexander on the 1850 Alabama census records. He gave the census taker the info that he was born in Scotland and he was 52 years old, which would make his birth year 1798. It also shows his wife as Martha, born in Tennessee, and a teenage daughter living at home. That all makes sense because Arthur was born in Tennessee. My grandfather, Claude, once told me a story that the Nicholson's came to Alabama from Tenn driving a herd of cattle way before the Civil War. He believed that was when the name got changed from Nicholson to Nickolson. Seems one of the Nickolson boys was in trouble for stabbing a man in a knife fight. On a personal note, I am the granddaughter of Claude Nickolson, who was Lindsey's brother. My grandma was Hattie, my dad was Clifton who passed away in 1999. Dan and I are third cousins, or first cousins twice removed as we say in Virginia. I barely remember Elisha, I think he died when I was pretty young - seems like I remember a big long mustache which scared me. My aunts and uncles referred to him as Papa (but they pronounced it Popper). All of Dad's brothers are gone, but my three aunts (Faye, May, and AnnaMarie) are still going strong. I will keep you posted as I find out more information on Alexander. If you get a minute, would you send the names of his other children and we may be able to figure out Martha's father and Alexander's father. I live near an outstanding geneological library and will start looking at passenger lists. I do have some information on the Cooper's which I will send you as soon as I get it in a more readable format. Keep in touch and I will do the same. Please tell my newly found cousin, Dan, hello for me as well as your family. Warm regards, Kay Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
