    2. Bobbie [Speir] Jarvinen
    3. I'll try sending this trough again, evidently it didn't go when I sent it through a couple days ago as I didn't get one copy sent to me. I am searching for information on the death of HARRIS SPEIR b abt 1801 Jackson Co, GA. he is the son of John Speir & Rachel Bagby of Pike Co GA He was married to HANNAH COKER in Bibb Co AL, dau of Philip Coker. HANNAH ae 47 was listed in the 1950 Chickasaw Co, MS, census in son-law-home Isaac Thacker Bailey and daughter Marian Speir household along with her youngest children, Mahaley 21, George Washington, 19, Henry Harris 17, and Thomas Wilson 12. Thomas, the baby being born 6 Dec 1839. I assume HANNAH died before the 1960 census as she is not listed with other family members in the 1869 Yalobusha Co, MS Oakland Dist. census. I want to try to figure out what happened to HARRIS, assumedly he died, but I want to see if I can prove that and where he died. If any of this looks familiar to you please contact me. Thanks, Bobbie. »§«:*´`³¤³´`*:»§« God Bless America »§«:*´`³¤³´`*:»§« Visit my constantly changing Website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=speir-jarvinen Searching: Speir, Bailey, Lake, Mathis, Coker

We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. But a lot of others are. kemis Since I last searched the Bureau of Land Management's records (some time ago), they have updated their files to allow for Adobe Acrobat PDF files to read and save the patents. This makes is a lot easier to read the land patents compared to the GIF or TIFF files in use before. 3. Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie Hi, I received this from another email list. I looked at it for GA, it's not a lot. But it's a start. Maybe you can find something for you. kemis From: Poor House Lady Sent: Saturday, June 01, 2002 7:51 AM Subject: POORHOUSE Information The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a lot of new material and have almost totally reorganized your page. That's because so many of you responded to our questions with a great deal of more specific information. When we used your photos or quotes we cited you as the source. But we want to thank the many of you who simply offered suggestions or clarifications. And that's the best way for a clearinghouse to work! Among other things, there is a new photo album and a timeline based on quoted excerpts from many of your local histories, etc. Here is a tip to help you follow all of this: FIRST there was a city almshouse in Poughkeepsie, then that almshouse became a county poorhouse, then the city & county divided up their poor relief system, and the county built a new county poorhouse in 1863 in Oak Summit near Millbrook in the town of Washington, and then the city of Poughkeepsie built a new City almshouse on the old site in 1868-69. Whew! IMPORTANT NOTE! If you want to see the latest information posted ... you will probably need to click REFRESH or RELOAD on every page to which you go that you may have visited recently. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on on your state on the table of states, and then if the county is there, click on it. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [ALCOOSA] Willingham, Strong, Herring and related families
    2. Laurie L. Wicks
    3. Hi, everyone. I'm searching for information about the Alban Willingham family of Coosa and Chambers Co., AL. I'm interested in anything to do with this family, but am most interested in what happened to his son Shamie Willingham b 1815 GA married Elizabeth Strong. Some sources have said he died about 1840, but I have found land deeds where he purchased land after that, as well as having traced what I believe to be his family to Harrison Co., TX. I believe he and his wife died in TX sometime between 1852 and 1860 since their children reappear in GA and AL with relatives by the time of the 1860 census. The children as I have found them are Mary "Frances" Willingham b abt 1839 in AL; M.A.C. Willingham b abt 1841 in Chambers Co., AL; C.R. Willingham b abt 1843 in Chambers Co., AL; S.H. Willingham b abt 1845 in Chambers Co., AL; Sherman/Shami Onice Willingham b Dec. 1846 in AL (on way to TX) d Sept. 18, 1916 in AL married 30 Oct 1867 in Henry Co., GA to Sarah "Sallie" L. Owen; William Madison Willingham b 1850 in TX. I descend from the above Sherman/Shami Willingham and wife Sarah - they were my gggrandparents. I am desperately trying to find who and where the other children were and went, as well as locate any further info I can find about this family, including Alban's parentage, which is believed to be Jesse Willingham of VA and Oglethorpe Co., GA. I believe this family was of mixed Creek heritage, as Alban and several of his sons received land grants in AL as part of the Creek Treaty, and would love to find further info about this, as well.
