    3. The Historical Society has several historical books for sale. There are 2 volumes of cemetery records for $20 each and a 3rd vol for $22 or all 3 for $55. Also, A history of Coosa County by George Brewer that is $20. Coosa County Marriages (1834-1865) by Edna McGalliard for $20. Then, there is the Heritage of Coosa County (Hard Cover) that contains over 600 family's stories, pictures, and topicals that is $65. The Historical Resource and Records Room in the Courthouse is open on Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 - 2:30. It might be possible for Mrs. Sallas to open it up at other times, but I'm not sure about that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bannister, Lisa" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 4:42 PM Subject: RE: [ALCOOSA] RESEARCH IN COOSA CO AL > Nancy, > > P. 3. Glenn, Ben's wife Joyce has passed some information to us at the Coosa County Historical Society. This information is in our Record and Resource room next to the court house. There was a lot of information that Ben had in his head and not on paper, that is now lost. I have been working on Ben Carlton's connection with the Smith line and can only find a limted amount of information in his files. 1. Re: [ALCOOSA] RESEARCH IN COOSA CO AL
    2. Hi Sam and all, I thought I'd send this to the group. Do you all know the best place to do Coosa Co. research, other than the courthouse, is at the B.B. Comer library in Sylacauga (Talladega County)? Carolyn Luttrell, who died in the 1970s, did extensive work on Talladega and Coosa counties and it's all housed in the genealogy room at the library. You can look in the card catalog, which is on line at http://www.sylacauga.net/library but I love to just stand and scan the shelves. Most of the books themselves, however, are not indexed. When you see a book that interests you, you'll have to go page by page to see if your family is mentioned. There are a lot of family histories, copies of the census with notes on individual families, deed extracts, etc. Nelda Vogel is the librarian most familiar with the collection, and can do limited research for you if you call or write. How much time she can spend on your request depends on how busy she is at the time. I can research the collection, but since I have a lot on my plate, I couldn't do it for free. Gotta get that last child out of college. I can't afford to take much time away from something that does pay. ;-) The Coosa Co. courthouse is on Highway 21 in Rockford. To get to the Sylacauga library, simply travel north on 21 about 20 miles. It'll be on your left in downtown Sylacauga. Can't miss it. I promise! You'll come down a nice tree lined street, come to a red light with First Baptist church and parking lot on the right and the park and post office on your left, go through the next block with Rite Aid and a bank, FNB or something, and the library's on the next block. There's plenty of parking in the back. It's a temporary location while the old library is being remodeled and expanded. They should be back in their permanent location after the first of the year. It's on Highway 21 also, just a few blocks down and on the right. Just before the railroad tracks. The only motels nearby are in Sylacauga and Alexander City. I'd go for Sylacauga since you need to hit the library here anyway. The motels are on Highway 280 which you'll go under when coming in on 21. Or you can go west at the post office and that road (Ft. Williams) will take you right into 280. Nothing's hard to find in Sylacauga. LOL I think I'd recommend the Jameson Inn. There's also a bed and breakfast on Broadway (Highway 21). There's not a sign in front and I can't remember the name right now. Ben Carlton also had a large amount of research notes on Coosa Co. I don't know where his work is now. Probably with the Coosa County Historical Society which I know nothing about. Maybe someone else on the list knows? 2. Hello fellow researcher, As I have been told by my Grandfather, John Wesley Allen's father was James Allen and he was a traveling preacher and his wife's name was Rebecca. They lived in the old area of Coosa cty that is now Chilton. In the 1860 census John was a farm hand with a family on the east side of the Coosa river. I also know of a Allen cemetary on the east side of the river, can't remember the road it was on but had a fairey crossing many years ago before the river was Damed up. thanks Joel T. 1. Re: [ALCOOSA] Harris
    2. I have not come across the Harris family but will keep you in mind. I am seeking any information on the Humphries-Lawson family. I know nothing of the Lawson family but have learned that the Humphries lived in Coosa County near Buyck until the area became a part of Elmore County. My gt gt grandfather was Calvin Humphries and was born in South Carolina in 1806. He came to Coosa County during the 1840s. He died in 1890 and is buried along side my gt gt grandmother, Annie M. and some of their siblings at Providence Methodist Church near Buyck Community. I have a list of all of the Humphries buried there and will be happy to share them. My gt grandfather, James Francis Humphries, was born in 1841 Harris, Georgia. He served with the 13th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and married Sarah Jane Lawson in 1866. They had several children. Martha, a daughter, was born to them in 1869 and my grandfather, James Francis Humphries, was born in Elmore County in 1875. I have not found Calvin or his wife in any documents, but James Francis and Sarah show up in the 1880 Census. At some point afterwards James Francis took the family to Oklahoma . I have been unable to learn when the relocation took place. Thank you for your time. James F. Humphries

    3. Joel, If John Wesley ALLEN is John W. ALLEN, son of James B. ALLEN, I have much information about the ALLEN family to share with you. I descend from Albert ALLEN, son of Hezekiah ALLEN & Elizabeth MARCHMAN. 1. [ALCOOSA] Allen Family
    2. Hello My Allen family originated in Wheeling (Ohio County) W.Virginia while West Virginia was still part of Virginia. GG- grandfather George Allen ( 1854-1889)married Emma King ( Louisana??) ( died 1881) produced five children Della (m.Charles Smith),Gertrude (m.? Massie),Emma (m.John Scott)Simeon and William (my great grandfather)(m. Annie Corcoran) My family branch can be traced with their white owners up thru the 1930 census. Im still looking for Emma and Gertrude and what happened to their families although by their marriage certificates both of their spouses were from Belmont County ,Ohio. Simeon worked as a pullman porter and retired to Connecticut according to family stories. Ive not validated this either. Della died in Pittsburgh Pa in 1948 verified. If this helps you and me please call Tori
