The ferry did not close until the bridge was built which I think was in around 1958. As far as the Allen's in Chilton Co., I am familiar with them and have most of them in my files but cannot tie them into the Allen family that my grandmother descended from which was a Richard Allen born in about 1826 in AL. 3. Hway 22 had a ferry crossing before Mitchell Dam was built. Some of my great-uncles ran the ferry at one time. Everything east of the Coosa River is Coosa County. The Coosa River is the county line between Coosa and Chilton. They lived in the old area of Coosa cty that is now Chilton. In the 1860 census John was a farm hand with a family on the east side of the Coosa river. I also know of a Allen cemetary on the east side of the river, can't remember the road it was on but had a fairey crossing many years ago before the river was Damed up. thanks Joel T. 2. Caroline, Your Horton line wouldn't happen to be of the Shelby Co. Hortons would it? My maiden name was Horton. There were a couple of young fellows living with other Horton families in Shelby Co. in the 1860s who moved to another county, I'm thinking maybe Coosa. I'd have to check my records. Seems like one of them was James. Is the Horton name yours or your husbands? If you're like me, you have much more interest in your own family. My husbands family files are a lot smaller than mine. ;-) Wanda Horton Craft > John Lester Horton > William Thomas Horton, Jr. > William Thomas Horton > Elijah Horton The end. 1. [ALCOOSA] Research Room of the Coosa Co., AL historical society
    2. I have been reading the recent correspondence about the research room currently being staffed by members of the Coosa Co., AL., historical society. I think that the research room is a great place for those of us who live outside of the area to be able to visit and review the family data and records maintained there. My question is as follows: I have for many years research in detail ten (10) or more different family lines that settled and lived in the Coosa Co., AL., area from ca 1832 to the 1860 timeframe. Would the historical society be interested in receiving family histories from people such as I that could provide information for use in the research room? Is there someone I could contact to see if the society is interested? Many people involved in family history research have provided me with family details that has saved me many hours of work, and I would like to share my info. It is just a matter of many copies of my word processor files, and fwd to the society for the family files in the research room, if someone is interested in the data. i.e. I have a Kelly family history for the Jacob Kelly line which appears in the 1850 census. I wasted five or six years of work on Irish Kellys only to find out that my Kelly line of Coosa was actually German Koelle/Khelles who changed their name to Kelly and migrated to Coosa Co. ca 1848. I have data with wills, land deeds, etc and have documented this line. This line continued to live in the Coosa/Elmore area, and descendants are still in the county. If someone has a contact, please let me know. Thanks Ann Corum Researching: Kelly Gaylor Dunlap Varner Suttle Gantt Wingard Cranford Hill Lybrand Wilson

    3. Ann, I said in the last e-mail we would love any information you would pass on to us. We are making different files for information on families that were in early Coosa County and as people come by they are able to read and make copies of the information. I know that you are one of our members and we do appreciate all that our members to help keep the Historical Society going. We have been able to keep the records and research room open 2 days aweek during the summer, we will go to once a month during the winter. During the winter we hope to work on a new marriage book of the county, so we will be in and out all during the week. Again if you have any information that you would like to share please send to the: Coosa County Historical Society Attn. Wayne Sewell P. O. 2. I am seeking any information on the Humphries-Lawson family. I know nothing of the Lawson family but have learned that the Humphries lived in Coosa County near Buyck until the area became a part of Elmore County. My gt gt grandfather was Calvin Humphries and was born in South Carolina in 1806. He came to Coosa County during the 1840s. He died in 1890 and is buried along side my gt gt grandmother, Annie M. (maiden name unknown) and some of their family at Providence Methodist Church near Buyck Community, which now in Elmore County. I have a list of all of the Humphries buried there and will be happy to share them. My gt grandfather, James Francis Humphries, was born in 1841 Harris, Georgia. He served with the 13th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and married Sarah Jane Lawson in 1866. They had several children. Martha, a daughter, was born to them in 1869 and my grandfather, James Francis Humphries, was born in Elmore County in 1875. I have not found Calvin or his wife in any documents, but James Francis and Sarah show up in the 1880 Census. At some point afterwards James Francis Sr, took the family to Oklahoma . I have been unable to learn when the relocation took place or exactly where they went. Thank you for your time. James F. Humphries
