I saw Barabara Winge's contribution of the Revolutionary war pension application for John Townsend. Does anyone have any more information on this family? My gggrandmother was Alabama Jacks from Coosa Co. She married George Townsend whose father is a John Townsend (in Morgan Co AL 1860 & 1880). Until recently I couldn't figure out why a girl from Coosa Co would marry a guy in Morgan county, (married 23 Aug 1877 in Morgan Co). George is living with his father John and mother Amanda in 1860 Morgan Co, but can't find any data for 1870. At the library the other night, I found a Coosa co marriage record for a John Townsend and Amanda Lyle in 1848. I think this may be my John because on the 1860 Morgan Co. census she says born in GA and the Lyle's in Coosa Co in 1850 were also from Georgia. Would appreciate any help you can give me. Sam Austin [email protected]
Bill, I believe your "Hall" clan could be related by marriage. I think your Correlia is actually Cornelia who married my Joseph Cardwell. They had 3 children before Joseph died. Cornelia (she was sometimes called Roxanna or C.C.) remarried a Mr. Collier. I believe Cornelia's dad (Issac Hall)was a Justice of the Peace in Coosa, as I have seen his name on marriage bonds/licenses. The Hall family lived near Weoka Creek very near my Cardwell relatives. Both the Hall and Cardwell family came from Troup Co. GA. Remember that the County line changed between 1870 and 1880. Check both Coosa and Elmore for information. I hope this helps. I've had past contact with Angela Packer, also descended from Philip, and she was very helpful to me. I know of the two Jackson siblings in one branch of that line (Thomas and Nancy) who each married a Culver brother and sister, Rachel and Obediah. I've yet to uncover any kind of blood connection to that Jackson group, but Rachel and Obediah are most probably my 5G Aunt and Uncle. It would seem that their older brother Joseph is my 4G Grandfather. So far, I'm aware of at least a couple or three other Jackson lines, but I keep getting stuck at my GGG Grandfather and can't determine any connection to any of them. And every time I get the motivation to dig some more, my work schedule gets in the way!! :-) = Steve = -- Steve W. Polly, This is Katherine, next door. I received this message you sent to Steve but I believe it came to me by mistake. Don't know how this happened. But I will take a close look at the Jacksons and see how it might fit my family. OK ? Katherine - Talk to you later.
Dear Steve, I can`t remember whether I wrote you before or not. My maiden name is Jackson. I grew up in Autuaga Co, Al, the granddaughter of Dr Stonewall W Jackson. His father was Wingate Jackson of Elmore County who had a daughter who married a Thornton in Elmore County. Wingate`s father was Philip Jackson of Hancock and then later Spalding Co, Ga. He had a daughter who married a Culver. I don`t know if you and I are related but it sounds like we have the same family background somewhat. I presently live in Birmingham but have three brothers in Montgomery. One is Winget, one Curtis Eugene (goes by Curt) and James Edward who lives on the Maxwell Base. Would love to hear from you about the Jackson family if you think we have mutual family. Sincerely, Pauline (Polly) Jackson Clarke

Hello, I had several people who asked for a follow up on the Coosa County Historical Society trip to Flagg Mountain, so this is it. We had over 50 people at our meeting at the Unity Presbyterian Church which was organized 145 years ago and their present building was erected in 1889. After the meeting we traveled by cars (about 40 people) up the Mountain. When we got to the top, which took 20 minutes, we were on our own to go up in the tower, walk around the top and look at all the views. The weather was fair; no rain but overcast and the temperature was in the 70s. The view from atop this mountain is so beautiful, you can see for miles and miles (7 counties) the trees were changing color WHAT A VIEW. Then we went down to see the log cabins, which were built about 1/3 way down the mountain from the tower. Joe Rogers gave us a personal tour of the area. Joe and a group of concerned men who live in the area are in the process of restoring the tower and log cabins. Thanks to the 215 men of the CCCs who developed this area in 1933-42, but thanks to Joe Rogers and his group the concerned men for their effort and expense on restoring Flagg Maintain. The trip to Flagg Mountain was wonderful. Wayne SewellAlexander City, [email protected]: Baker, Carnes, Hardwick, Moatts, Sewell, Smith, Teel, Woodall --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I would like to know if anyone knows about the E.D. Bonner family that lived in Coosa County near Macedonia Church in the early 1900's. My mother went to school at Stewartville School. E. D. was a nickname for her Dad. Everyone called him Ed Bonner but his name was Eddie Garfield Bonner and he had one brother named Henry. Ed was married to a twin Ella Conaway. They had 11 children...2 died at birth. One died at age 2 from meningitis. Other children were Odell, Mary Lucille, Mamie Irene, Marion (only living son), Nancy Catherine, Emma Lee, Lora Nell, and my mother, Maudie Bernice. Moma said she was born in a house in Coosa County that someone she called Uncle Herb or Erb owned for a while. Does anyone have any info on this family's early where about's. Many relatives are buried in the Macedonia Church Cemetery. In fact, my sister was buried as an infant in a grave that they forgot to mark. Does anyone know how you can find any records on the grave plots? Also, my moma was married to Eddie (Lomer Edwin) Strickland. He was from Jackson Mississippi but lived for a time in Alabama and had some relatives in the Sylacauga area. Does anyone know anything about him? He drove for Nehi Bottling company and Dr. Pepper Company. Thanks. Susan Strickland Grondin
Rita, the book, The Heritage of Coosa County, Alabama has the following information: "Sheriff Goggans served as sheriff of Coosa County from 1911 - 1915.......................... Sheriff Goggans had the sad duty of having to hang a man - the only man ever legally hanged in Coosa County. The prisoner was Charlie White, convicted of murdering Dock Maxwell........................ Charlie stood in the window before his execution and addressed the crowd who had gathered to witness the hanging. He told them all that women and whiskey had put him were he was and appealed to the crowd to avoid sin and meet him in heaven. A relative on my mother's side told me that he was a 10 year old boy at the time, that he was there, and that Charlie White's words stayed with him more than any sermon he had ever heard in church. Howard, Jr. is a grandson of Lamar and Vera White who owned adjoining land to my grandparents before selling part of it to my Aunt Grace in 1946 and re-locating to Whigham, GA. Their property was a few miles west of Rockford near what is now hway 22 and included some of Swamp Creek through it. Two of their daughters, Minnie and Virginia still live in Whigham. Howard, Sr., their son, died a few years ago, but lived in Sylacauga for years. I never heard of a Charlie, but he was before my time, so I don't know if he is a relatie or not. Howard White, Jr. of Tuscaloosa's mother is still in Sylacauga, Dera, but she has recently re-married and I don't remember her new last name. A cousin of mine who's dones extensive research, some of it in Coosa, and published two books, says he remembers at least one 1800's hanging being mentioned in the County Commissioners' minutes he researched. He was only looking at that period of those minutes and only for our mutual great-grandfather who served as a commissioner just after the Civil War. So he did no research on such in the 1900's era. He suggests you search the Commissioners minutes for 1915. Do you mean you don't think the old jail was in use in 1915? I don't remember when the one before this was built. I would think the records would be in the courthouse as well. This courthouse was built after the old one around the turn of the century, right? There are NO records in the jail about who was there, you would think they would be in the court house. I dont think the old jail was not in use in1915. He was hung there for killing a man. I believe it was around 1915 in Rockford. I am searching the White, Morris, Dunnaway, and Butler families of Coosa County. I went to the courthouse there in Coosa County but no one there could help me find the records on Charlie White. If anyone can help me find this information i will be very grateful.
