William C. Brown was living in Talladega Ct. in 1853. However the three counties come together at a given point. Talladega, Coosa, and Clay. Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church is located in Brownville Community . This is just a hop skip and jump from Clay and Coosa Counties. according to the book Hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church 1832- 1982, Clay County, Alabama. A Record through June 30, 1982, compiled by Mary E. Watts. On page four it mentions William Brown. Page 4, Atter the Treaty of Cusseta, the state legislature created nhine counties, including Talladega, from the ceded lands on Dec. 18, 1932. Settlers from surrounding counties in the state began to come into Talladega Co., to settle the recently ceded lands. Others came form the Carolinas, Tenn., and other states later on. Those coming to the Brownville area were mainly from the Cape Fear region of North Carolina which had been settled largely by immigrants from Scotland or of Scottish ancestry form North Ireland. It has not been possible to determine just when these earliest settlers first came into the community, but records of the land patents giving ownership of the land are recorded for some in the Tract Book for Talladega Co., Some of these are: Malcomlm Patterson in March, 1835, Theodore Levie in Septl, 1835; Daniel Smith in Dec., 1836; Martin T. Bull in Dec., 1836 (land for which his father, William C. Bull, had earlier entered a claim); William C. Brown in March, 1837; Thomas B. Graham in March, 1837; Catherine Bethune in Feb., 1838; Gideon Braddy in May, 1839. Duncan and John B. Brown were there by 1835 as they are said to have been charter members of the hatchett Creek Presbyterian Church. listed on page 27 (unter Chronological Membership Roll Col. William C. Brown, m. Ann Graham Talladega Co. Before 1845; was nominated for elder Nov. 6, 1859, but not elected, NFR; (means no further record) might have been killed in Civil War. Ann (Graham) Brown, d. 'just a guess, but would love a response from any other interested parties: It appears that the enumerator indicated in Column 12 by the name of the head of the household how many persons in the family attended school within the year VERSUS putting a mark by the name of each individual that attended school within the year. Does anyone else see this phenomena and have a theory??? I am looking in particular at Image 26 of 218 for my GGG on line #21 - She is E. Power [incorrectly transcribed as E. Pancer - I have submitted a correction to Ancestry.] There is a "1" in Column 12 to the right of her name which would indicate that she [60 years old] had attended school within the past year. Not that it was an impossibility, but I looked at other families at random for the 218 images, and it does seem that the enumerator is tallying beside the head of household.......for scho! ol attendance or something else. Has anyone else wondered about this? Thank you, Sally in Springville
I am new to the Coosa County mailing list. I am looking for information on my Atkinson family. I have recentely confirmed they were living in Coosa county in 1850. In 1860 they are found living in Augusta, Richmond County Georgia. Here is my lineage in short, you will see several birth places listed as I have found conflicting information even among my immediate family member knowledge. So I will list all states. By 1880 I have found William Jeptha Atkinson living in the Birdsville, Herndon area of Burke county Georgia on the Burke County Emanuel county line. Some of children including my grandfather moved to Atlanta after about 1910.I have compiled information on alot of the grandchildren of William Jeptha but nothing else on the other children. I also do not know the parents of Robert B Atkinson b 1822. If any one can help me I would appreciate it. I was also wondering if Coosa county had a state tax digest for the 1840's and 1850's?
