Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4R.2ADE/953 Message Board Post: As one who has searched for the burial site of a Confederate ancestor killed in battle, I know the difficulty in locating burial sites. I offer these names from the Conecuh Guards that comprised Co. E, 4th Ala. Reg. killed at 1st Manassas. Sgt. I.C. Gatch and J.D. Robbins are named on the Conecuh Guard roster. S.J. Matthews is not named but MAY be a Conecuh man. Source: Confederate Veteran magazine, Vol. I, Issue 3, pg. 12, dated March 1893. The article submitted by Mrs. Alice Trueheart Buck of Washington, D.C. is entitled "Confederate Dead at Manassas" Mrs. Buck was part of a group of ladies from the area who raised money to construct a Confederate monument. The State of Virginia donated $1000. Before the monument was constructed, a survey of the battlefield was conducted. Mrs. Buck recorded the names of the Confederate dead from the old wooden gravemarkers. The dead were disinterred and reburied at the site of the monument which was constructed over the common grave holding the remains of those killed in the battle. For the families of Sgt. Gatch and Pvt. Robbins, the final resting spot for their Conecuh ancestors is noted.
