I have a few copies of the Conecuh 1866 census and I thin I did see an A J Griffin on them. It's just that, if a delayed birth certificate has Evergreen, Conecuh County, AL as Millard's birthplace, there had to be some reason for putting it on there. I'm pretty sure Millard or James or whatever was raised by relatives. He may have gone to Evergreen at age 2 or 3 but I was told that his people were from NC and SC and I know that some of the Griffins there in 1850 - 1870 are born in SC. I was also told that there was a David Hobson Griffin born in Conecuh County in about 1823 who later moved to LA and AR. I was told that Millard had been to LA and TX also. I am not a Griffin but I am researching them, like you, for a friend who is. I think that Millard was raised in Evergreen for a time by Griffin relatives who may have called him James??? He was born about 1858 or 1859. He was 75 when he died in Chickasha, Grady Cou! nty, OK in 1934. Someone somewhere is looking for him under some other first name, I bet. In 1880, he is in Morgan County, AL and there are tons of Griffins there. It would be a real triumph, if we can find this man. Phyllis
