Have you caught any of them yet?!! Seriously, it is very interesting that you bring up Johnsons in Washington County, FL and Conecuh & Henry Counties, AL. I have not idea about Henry County, other than generally I have found that many folks in Conecuh were at one time in Henry. But about Washington County, FL. Let me lay the foundation (and hope this rings a bell with you). I have 2 g-grandfathers in Conecuh on the 1840 census living very close to each other (as if they may be relatives?): Richardson Johnson (wife unknown, maybe Effa/Effie) and James Johnson (wife Emily) -- all born in GA. They are connected to the older Silas and Tempie (maiden name Kelly) Johnson -- many times James & Richardson are close to Silas & Tempie on the census -- AND James has children named Silas and Tempy. I cannot explain this connection to Silas & Tempie, but the more research I do, I feel that although everyone's last name is Johnson, the connection between Richardson and James to Silas and Tempie is thru their wives (Emily and Effa/Effie?), but anyway.... James & Emily are on the 1850 Conecuh census. Richardson cannot be found in 1850, though later censuses show that about that time he had sons born in Arkansas and Mississippi. But on the 1850 Conecuh census, close to Silas & Tempie is an Effa Johnson with a young son named Richardson and other children that "fit" many of Richardson's older children. Hmmmmmm.... Richardson is then in Baldwin County, AL from 1853 until death in about 1894. James and Emily are in Escambia County, FL on the 1860 census. He is back in Conecuh in 1870 and Emily died there in March 1870 (per the 1870 Conecuh Mortality Schedule). Listed in the home with James on the 1870 cenus is a Polly Johnson, age 85 (born about 1885), born NC. Hmmmm, could this be his (and maybe also Richardson's) mother? I know that Polly was/is many times a nickname for Mary. I have searched and searched the 1850 and 1860 censuses and the only Mary (Polly) Johnson I can find that was born about 1885 in NC and living in the extended area around Conecuh County was Mary, wife of Greenberry Johnson in Washington County, FL! 1850 Washington County census, page 287B & 288A: David Johnson - 40 - GA Mahaly Johnson - 24 - AL ... Greenberry Johnson - 80 - NC Mary Johnson - 63 - NC 1860 Washington County census, page 1023: Darling Johnson - female - 27 - GA Mary Johnson - 80 - NC Lena Courtney - 56 - GA .. David Johnson - 54 - GA Mahala Johnson - 35 - AL Of course I cannot tie all these folks together, but it seems about right. And you mention the connection between the Washington County and the Conecuh County Johnsons! Your ggg-grandfather was Elijah Johnson. Where does he connect? Is he a son of Greenberry and Mary? Is he connected to Silas and Tempie? Connected to James and Richardson? Idella, please feel free to write me directly if you prefer. Ken Johnson, Jackson, MS
