The name was taken from a county name in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The current name for the same county is Ross, I believe. The misspellings in census records, etc. has made research difficult. Legend states that the original brothers fled the King of England by settling in upper Scotland, then on to N.C. and Canada. They may have originally held the surname DOUGLAS, as most Cromartie graves in the Orkney Islands bear the bleeding heart, the crest of the Douglas clan.
