W.S. Howell passed away at his home, 10:30 p.m. Nov. 20, following a long illness. He was born in Patsburg, Ala., Oct. 18, 1893, and there he spent his earliest years. After returning home from service in World War I, he moved from Andalusia to his permanent home near Castleberry. He had been a member of the Hamden Ridge Church for almost 25 years. He was also steward of the church and had served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He was a member of the Mosonic Lodge at Castleberry and at the time of his death, he held the highest office of the lodge. Survivors include his wife Armenia Adams Howell; one son, W.S. Howell, Jr., Castleberry; one daughter, Elizabeth Howell also of Castleberry; one brother, Herman E. Howell, Mobile, Ala.; four sisters, Mrs. Lee J. Castleberry, Castleberry, Mrs. Alan Pitt Griffin, Mobile; Mrs. Edward L. Elmore, Montgomery, and Mrs. Ira Williamson. Funeral services were held at the church, Nov. 22, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. J. E. Joyner and the Rev. J. R. Helms officiating. Masonic services were held at the grave. Interment was made in Hamden Ridge Cemetery with Cope Funeral Home in charge. Pall bearers were all members of the Masonic Lodge and included: Robert Ashley Henderson, Benjamin F. Barlow, Carl S. Stacey, Williard C. Booker, Wilbur Pierce and Ernest Brewton.
