    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4R.2ADE/1598.1 Message Board Post: I assume you've already looked in the census records for 1830 & 1840 Conecuh. Do you have any idea of the age of Sarah Mitchell when she married Rev. Joseph Mitchell? Or where they were married? I've got Dr. Milton in Conecuh Co--1830 & 40 & 50 censuses; and if I'm not mistaken, at some time, the late A.D. Clark had compiled some historical information on Dr. Amos for someone; however, we didn't get any of his works when he passed away. If there's anything I can look up for you here at the library, let me know, and I'll see what I can find. In Mary G. Brantley's book: "Settlers Along the Old Federal Road, In Conecuh & Monroe Counties" it has the following excerpt: William B. Amos was born abt 1822 & died 18 Nov 1901. He was the son of Dr. Milton & Susan Reese AMOS. (Dr. Milton Amos came to AL in 1819 & served as Postmaster at Belleville in 1840.) Wm. B. AMOS was a merchant near Burnt Corn. First marriage was to Julia A. GREEN, born 9 Nov ___(incorrect--reads 1932) & died 2 June 1856. His 2nd marriage was to Katie Ivey, 6 Apr 1880. Wm. Amos served as Capt. in the CSA. Children by 1st marriage: [1]Mary Louise AMOS, b. 3 Feb 1850-d. 22 Aug 1931, m. Alonzo Judson LEE 21 Dec 1871 (he was born 12 Oct 1842-d. 22 Jan 1919) Both are buried at Burnt Corn Baptist Church Cem. [2] Sarah AMOS b. 1851 [3] John M. AMOS m. Josephine HIGDON, 16 Oct 1878 (poss. Josephine CRAWFORD) [4] Lawrence N. AMOS b. [none]--d. 16 Dec 1920 m. Phoebe IVEY--b.--d. 16 Oct 1905 [5] William (Billy) B. AMOS, Jr. b. 1858--d.1882 (killed by RR engineer) William B. & Julia Green AMOS are buried in the John GREEN, Sr. Cemetery near Burnt Corn. [This information was compiled by Mrs. Gertrude Stephens, Spanish Fort, AL}--she is still living and I've her address, if you need it. Thought I'd pass this info along, though I feel like you've already checked it out; and the offer still stands if I can find something here at the library for you re: Milton Amos and daughter mystery.

    3. Judy: Hope someone in Conecuh Co will reply. Ms Johnston in the Evergreen Library has great knowledge of areas and is very interested in preservation of records. Sorry, off hand, I do not know her email. The Old Beulah Cemetery is 8 miles southeast of Evergreen on Lower Brooklyn road in T5N, R11E. The cemeteries were recorded by a group some years ago (1986) and filles two books - have both. They state that there are many unmarked graves and depressions which indicate possible burial spots. For Old Beulah Cem: "Records compiled by Pinckney D. Bowles Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, November 1962." Jay: Sacred to the Memory of Wilson ASHLEY JAY, bor Sept 26, 1848 died Sept 5, 1877. True friend a devoted son and brother an affectionate husband. Note: At Old Brooklyn Cemetery (Old Brooklyn Methodist Cemetery) are graves of many descendants of Dr. Milton AMOS (Amos, Bethea, Rabun). If Dr. Milton Amos were buried in Alabama, don't know why he would not have been in this cemetery, but no record. Records copied April 1981 by Loree Hamiter assisted by Elsie Rabren. 3. Could someone offer information about Old Beulah Cemetery? I'd like to drive up from Pensacola this weekend and photograph the markers of pioneer Baptist ministers, Alexander Travis, Andrew Jay, and William C. Morrow. What is the present condition of the cemetery? Is it visible from the road? Has anyone been recently to note whether the markers still remain? I would be grateful for driving directions. I plan to go north on Highway 29, then 113 to Interstate 65. From there, I'd need instructions. Thanks so much. Judith R. 1. Findley graves removed
    2. DABF
    3. Information has been recently printed about the re-interment of Dolly and Magilbry Findley that is scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the Fairmount Baptist Church in Red Level, Alabama. Unfortunately, it repeated several old genealogical errors. More important is the manner in which these 121 and 148 year old graves were covertly dug up. These historic graves were summarily removed without consulting or obtaining a permit from the Alabama Historical Commission, providing the required 60-day advance public notice of the intent to remove graves, or otherwise attempting to comply with any of the other many laws and regulations that apply to grave removals. Proper protocol requires that a professional archaeologist and/or a funeral home be in charge of the removal of graves. Instead, according to one of the individuals involved in this situation, he and others simply took it upon themselves to bring digging equipment to the grave yard and remove two Findley graves. If public notice of the intent to remove these graves had been provided, the claim that these were “abandoned” graves would have quickly been dispelled. Moreover, older direct descendants have shared that there were several other graves adjacent to Dolly and Magilbry. However, as the requisite advance archeological examination was not permitted, it may now be impossible to confirm how many other graves were disturbed and/or destroyed. Magilbry Findley was a veteran of the War of 1812 and his grave was prominently marked with a VA headstone acknowledging his service to our Nation. Other 1812 historical societies and lineage groups were asked to hold a grave marking ceremony for the Saturday reburial. However, from the limited information that has been doled out to the active Findley family researchers, it appears that Ron Taylor, a local non-relative, is apparently “producing” a Confederate show for the Saturday re-interment. Understandably, the 1812 groups have declined to participate in such an in appropriate “event.” As land developments continue expanding, Alabama’s law addressing the proper removal and re-location of graves must be made known and full compliance be demanded in every instance. Maybe this will keep others from finding out that their family’s graves were removed and their remains were indiscriminately destroyed. Sincerely, D. A.
