Hello all, I've been researching Martin ancestors in Butler County, who appear to have arrived there around 1820-1823. The earliest record I have is some land grants to John and Peter Martin in 1823 and 1825 respectively. However, I have reason to believe that these Martins can be traced back to Conecuh county and that some remained there even after the "move" to Butler. Anyone else researching Martins in Conecuh county? Thanks, Patrick

You might want to subscribe to AL-FREEDMEN-l@rootsweb.com. And the rest of us can help you and others who are researching African-American lines by posting some of the information we find on the Freedmen list. A lot of wills we transcribe include the names of slaves and how their owners wanted them to be cared for after his death. I have even seen some wills with instructions for the kind treatment of aging slaves. Hello I am a new member and would like to introduce myself. My name is Sharon and I live in NYC. We are researching mulatto families in Covington County, Alabama. We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married. We descend from the JACKSON surname. Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most Jackson's continued to live in Covington well into the late 1930s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana and Mansfield, Ohio. We would love to correspond with others that are researching mulatto families from these areas. Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest. Her parents names are not known. She married JOHN WITHERINGTON (likely in either Butler or Conecuh County, AL) in 1824. I have data on land records where John Witherington acquired land jointly with Josiah Ellis in 1840; land was located in both Butler and Conecuh County, so their land was on both sides of Duck Creek in SW corner of Butler and NE corner of Conecuh. I feel that my Mary Ellis Witherington was somehow connected to the Ellis families of Butler County in 1830-1840 period. *From Butler/Conecuh County Federal Land Grants Index (Butler County WebPage) Josiah Ellis and John Witherington Butler/Conecuh County R 12E, T 8N Sec. 30 1840 <Part in Conecuh Co> Certificate # 35216 Dated January 13, 1840 to Josiah Ellis and John Witherington of Conecuh Co, AL Sale of Public Land - Cash Sale, Cahaba Land Office, AL SE Quarter, Section 30, T 8N, R 12E 160.7 Acres located in Butler & Conecuh County, AL Mary Ellis and husband, John Witherington migrated to Southern Arkansas (Ouachita County) about 1847. I have much info on their Arkansas family. I also have a good deal of info on John's father (William Witherington, Jr/wife-Sarah Stanley) and that entire family. There are a number of Ellis families from early Conecuh County, but we have tried with no results to link Mary Ellis to the Conecuh Ellis lines. I descend from Martha Caroline Witherington, oldest child of John & Mary Ellis Witherington. Martha Caroline married John T. King in AL about 1840-1843 and they migrated to Arkansas with her parents. *1830 Butler Co, AL Census ....John WITHERINGTON was on the next page living next door to Allen PAGE Family John WITHERINGTON (1830 Butler County, AL census) 1m 20-30 (John Witherington) 3f u5 (daughters: Martha Caroline-4 (1826), Sarah Jane-2 (1828) and Mary Elizabeth-1(1829) 1f 20-30 (Mary Ellis-wife) *From: "Collene Mount" <hcm100130@troycable.net> April 17, 2005 11:01 AM Subject:1830 Butler County Census I found John Witherington in the 1830 Butler County, Alabama census records on Page 303 Image 43 he is listed as 1 Male 20-30 1 Female 20-30 and 3 females under age 5. J.D. Simpson, Mr. Duke Rutland and Miss Tempie Millsap, all of Evergreen, AL The church was filled at an early hour in the afternoon, by quite a concourse of friends and citizens of the vicinity, in the presence of whom the handsome groom and lovely bride plighted their troth and were pronounced husband and wife. The bride was beautifullky dressed in gaslight blue ottomau silk, with blue satin paniers and blue velvet sleeves and bodice, blue velvet cap with a small white feather at one side, her hair was plaited loosely and tied with blue satin ribbon to match her dress. It looked like burnished gold as the sun shown on it through the open windows. She was beautiful indeed and equally so her bridesmaid, Miss Minnie Rutland, who was dressed in black cashmere with black velvet sleeves and bodice, and a large black hat with long black plumes gently flowing over her fair face. We must say they were the prettiest bride and bridesmaid we most ever saw. As soon as the service was over, the happy couple repaired to the home of the groonm in Old Evergreen. May their journey through life be one of pleasure and happiness.
