Ada was not Cherokee, but Lakota. It was her grandmother, Caroline Hawsey that was the slave, kidnapped from the Black Hills along with 6 other women around 1847. Two of the seven women were sisters, as the family history goes, when the slave owner died, the girls were married to area farmers. The will of Elizabeth Hunter of Conecuh County Alabama list a Caroline and child and Sarah as slaves. The child is Rebecca Ann Hawsey Weaver. Caroline was married to John Hawsey of Conecuh County. Sarah is later lister with the family on the 1870 census.
