Family of Leroy Page & Catherine Dorinda Witherington of Conecuh County, AL Generation No. 1 1. Leroy4 Page (Bennett Leroy3, Jacob2, John1) was born Abt. 1842 in Butler Co, AL (Source: Marsena Hawk Smith Info, Sept. 1999.), and died Unknown in Conecuh CO, AL (Source: 1870 Conecuh CO, AL Census.). He married Catherine Dorinda Witherington Bef. 1868, daughter of Daniel Witherington and Melissa King. She was born 13 Apr 1844 in Conecuh Co, AL (Source: Marriage Records (Vol 1 & 2) of Conecuh County, AL.), and died 05 Apr 1883 in Conecuh Co, AL. Notes for Leroy Page: <From Marsena Hawk on 3-11-2001> In message from Kay Anderson of Monroe County, AL: she says there were four Page boys in the 23rd Alabama Sharpshooters during a Civil War battle at Drewry's Bluff along the James River between Richmond and Petersburg. Joshua was killed, John W. was wounded in the fighting at Drewry's Bluff, went home from a Richmond hospital on August 18, 1864, and then returned after the end of the year. It also says Leroy was wounded in the side while serving in the trenches, admitted to a Richmond hospital on December 4, 1864, and returned to duty February 6, 1865. I'll bet this Leroy is the same fellow that married Catherine Dorinda Witherington. The three Page boys, with the exception of my Joshua, all enlisted on the same day in 1862 at Evergreen. Notes for Catherine Dorinda Witherington: Catherine Dorinda was the daughter of Daniel Witherington & Melissa King. Daddy spent all of his young years living with his maternal grandparents, James Edward Morris and Ella Quennie Hartley Morris due to the death of his mother Gladys Morris Bryant when he was only 31 days old. His mother died during the flu epidemic of 1918-1919. After his grandparents both died he made his home with his aunt James Edward Morris ( aunt Eddie) and uncle Seaborn J. Brundage in Evergreen, Alabama. Daddy fought in WWII with the U S Army. He slept in the fox holes and rode with the Red Ball Express as a radio operator, he experienced the front line of many campaigns and battles. He followed George Patton and felt it was his duty to fight for the protection of the United States of America, land that he loved. He returned to the USA and mustered out of the service in Texas where his only sister, Ethel Elizabeth Bryant Wilson lived. She had been reared by her father Joshua Bryant Jr. until his death in July 1926, after his death she lived with her paternal grandparents Josh and Elizabeth Hays Bryant in Mt Vernon , Alabama.. My daddy loved his country and stood by the train tracks as the trains carried young men to the Korean War and cried because he wanted to go with the "kids" as he called them when the Korean war was taking the young men to battle. He cried and said "They are just kids, I need to go to help them".....but he stayed to be with my mother, me and my younger brother because we needed his too. He was honored with the United States Flag draping his coffin when he died and was buried in July 1988 in Magnolia Cemetery Evergreen Alabama. Pages 135-137 of the 1820 Washington Co. GA Census are very interesting. I have Lees on both sides of my family. A few days ago, I was looking at the James HARTLEY (next door to Sampson LEE in 1820 Washington Co.), trying (along with Doc Lee) to determine if he could be the ancestor of my paternal Hartleys or if he is related to the James Hartley in 1830 Wilcox Co. or 1840 Covington Co.. Then yesterday I received a query about my maternal Joiners which required me to look at them in 1820. I knew my Joiners were from Washington Co. Ga. before Conecuh Co. Ala., but I was more than a little bit interested when I found all the following names and some other familiar ones all within three pages of each other. ----------------------------- *Name: Bud Lee Township: Not Stated County: Washington State: Georgia Year: 1820 Roll: M33_9 Page: 135 Image Number: 227 [also an Ira? At Enon Church cemetery located on the Old Stage Road (Old Federal Road) that is the county line between Monroe and Conecuh there are a number of unmarked graves. Mr. Jack Crawford (1882-1974) who lived there placed numbered markers on 65 unmarked graves about 50 years ago and recorded in a small book who was burried there. In his little notebook, which I have a copy of, he lists markers : #31 Mortimer P (Dock) Boulware #32 Lee Boulware No dates or other information is listed. Many of the graves seem to be from the 1800's - early 1900's. Could this be Olivia's brother?
TO Marsena & Eugenia & John Buford Page, Wonder if this is where the "10,000 acre Allen Page plantation" info came from?? As I said before, 10,000 acres is a lot of land!!!! Would have been over 15 Sections, almost half of an entire township.... Do you think it could have been mentioned in Riley's book? Eugenia has Riley's book..... ....maybe she will see what it says about the Allen Page family and how Riley mentioned or refers to the size of the PAGE plantation. Note below that the widow of Allen Page, Sarah (on 1860 Census), is shown to own $10,000 in real estate (value)... which would have been a lot of land in 1860. June - 1860 Conecuh County Census shows: House # 31 Family # 27 Evergreen Post Office *Sarah A. Page, age 50- b.NC $10,000 R.E. $22,265 Assets <nee: Wright> <widow of Allen Page> Mary A. Page, age 29- b.AL Kinchin R., age 24- b. AL - Farm Overseer Susan, age 22 - b.AL - Teacher C. School Haskel, age 18 - b.AL - Student Living nearby: #23 Daniel Witherington (64/SC) Family $2000/$4610 #25 Leander Witherington (32/AL) Family $1000/$2120 Also: nearby 1860 Conecuh County Census/Evergreen Post Office 6 June 1860 Fam# 28 George Johnson 31/AL Farmer $1200/$2500 Martha 29/AL (dau of Daniel & Melissa King Witherington) Henrietta 4/AL Mary 2/AL James 10 mos/AL Also Eugenia: please ask Dan if he has any idea what the value of land (per acre) in the Fork Sepulga area would have been back in 1860. Maybe we can estimate from that info actually how large a plantation (valued at $10,000) Allen Page owned when he was killed. Below is the paragraph that I have in my notes.... but I failed to indicate the source of the data..... (poor research on my part!!!) ------------------- >copied from my notes on Allen Page< "Allen Page (son of Jacob Page) and his wife Sarah Wright, owned the largest cotton plantation in Conecuh County prior to the Civil War. The 10,000 acre Page Estate, located in the community called "Fork Sepulga", extended into Butler County. After Allen Page was killed in 1859, his son, Kinchen Page, assumed responsibility for management of the family cotton plantation. Kinchen managed the plantation from the time of his father's death until the onset of the Civil War that marked the end of prosperity for the Allen Page family. When Federal troops marched into Conecuh County, killing all those who resisted, they burned the courthouse and other public buildings at Sparta. The occupying Yankee troops took over the Page Plantation and transformed it into their field military headquarters until the end of the war." ------------------- Any help will be greatly appreciated.
