Ted and I were in the Hayneville Courthouse, Lowndes County, Al., recently, and it was such a shock to see how the old records are being handled there. Precious original very old notes from fathers to the courts giving daughters, and sometimes, sons, permission to marry were just stuffed into a small envelope inside a large notebook. The notes are yellow and worn. These papers are priceless and should be preserved. Anyone could just walk out with them. I wish I could go back there and volunteer to preserve the records. Something NEEDS to be done soon. Unfortunately, in one GA town where I have done research, the old records were placed in garbage bags to be moved and "temporarily" stored in an attic of a public building...some were deemed trash and thrown out ...others remained but without being retrieved, forgotten and not cataloged. A group is trying to salvage them as they have been found and are deteriorating with their age and being so fragile. Much historical documentation has been lost forever. In those old newspapers in any given year that the Lodge was active, the paper would list the newest members of the lodges, the elected officials, etc and the dates of their meetings.
