IN LOVING MEMORY AZZIE LEE DUNCAN ( no dates given) The proud grandmother of 19 grandchildren who love her grandchildren would like to remember grandmama in loving ways, going out to eat, sitting out under the shade trees, going to Springhill Community Church for Sunday School, humming her favorite songs as she washed clothes or tended to her beautiful gardens. We also want to remember her kind ways feeding us and the neighborhood kids. Grandma we love you for the times you prayed with us and the times you gave us advice, for the times you put your loving hands out to catch us from falling by the wayside. We just want to say thanks and we will never forget you. We love you and one day I pray we will all be together again. I cannot say it enough, we love you Grandma, all 19 of us. IN LOVING MEMORY DONALD M. GODWIN, SR. Sept. 7, 1936-June 2, 1998 We did not know that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our heats to lose you, you did not go alone. For parts of us went with you, the God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly missed by your family, Wife, Barbara Godwin and children, Artie, Wayne, Mark, Chris and Mandy. (photo) CARD OF THANKS MR. Men of this command were raised in the counties of Clarke, Washington, Conecuh, Mobile, Wilcox, and Fayette. It was assigned to Clayton's, then Holtzclaw's Brigade, and took an active part in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Transferred to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, it suffered many hardships defending Spanish Fort. The regiment lost thirty-seven percent of the 490 engaged at Chickamauga, reported 214 casualties at Chattanooga, and totalled 272 men and 71 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, May 7-27, it lost 12 killed, 88 wounded, and 24 missing, had 236 fit for duty in November, 1864, and surrendered about 80 on May 4, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Charles T. Ketchum and A.R. Lankford, Lieutenant Colonel W.J. Hearin, and Major Origen S. Jewett. From Tom Morton: " William Leander Witherington was in the 38th Al. I had some good response at the beginning.....lately, haven't pursued it--and didn't have any reported at W'ton--found Levi & Wm. Morris on my own, thru looking at Conecuh Guards info for Morris. The P.D. Bowles Chapter of SCV want to know where any of the Conecuh Guards are buried. Subject:[canebrakesocietygroup] Confederate Burials in Conecuh County Members, please send me Confederate Soldiers' names, birth and death dates, place of burial, company, regiment, rank, etc for inclusion in book on same. I'm compiling a listing of every Confederate veteran who was buried in Conecuh County--those I've obtained from the 1907 Confederate Census--some I can find the places of burial--some I cannot find--alot of those I'm finding DO NOT have a CSA Marker or marker of any kind stating that they did indeed serve in the CSA. In the family histories, I'm sure that information is included; however, we now have over 350 of those files, so I cannot go thru every one of them..that's where you folks come in!If you know of where the ancestor is buried, please send that info to me; if you don't; yet have a definite death date--perhaps I can find some form of obituary that will tell me that--MAYBE--if you think that he might "possibly" be buried in a particular cemetery, send me the reasoning behind the possibility, and we can include it (i.e. family members are buried there, family owned land, etc). If you have an interesting story about the Confederate soldier--family anecdote; legend; etc...include that as well--or a connection to some other event or family in Conecuh, etc--include it as well. I will need all the help I can get on this project--we have a few of the soldiers' names listed in bits and pieces here at the library--thru the Conecuh Headstone books (many of which is in error) and the 1907 Census for the soldiers; but there really isn't anything so complete that can be accessed so easily by everyone searching for info--the Sons of the Confederacy, for example... H. BRYAN was badly burned. She was standing very close to an open grate, and her little girl Joy was playing near. She stooped to do something for the little one, and in doing so her skirt, already hot, caught ablaze. She began an effort to extinguish the flames. The child became excited and ran to her mother. Mrs. Bryan to keep her from catching on fire had to run from the child. She ran to Mrs. W. H. KNOX next door. A colored woman attracted by her screams ran to her and with the aid of Mrs. KNOX, tore from her the burning clothing. While Mrs. BRYAN is badly burned she will recover and at this hour is resting quietly. It is indeed fortunate that the fire did not reach her face, though the lower limbs and back are terribly burned. Little Joy was not burned at all as was first reported. ------------------------------------ from the Greenville Advocate (9/13/1913) "Mrs. S. R. Nicholas STALLWORTH, Miss Sallie, on yesterday evening, was an occasion of broader interest than any event that has occurred in Evergreen for some years. The fortunate man was Mr. George H. BRYAN, a successful druggist of Georgiana, who has been among the most faithful of Miss STALLWORTH's admirers. The happy ceremony occurred at the Episcopal church which had been tastefully decorated by the loving hands of admiring friends. The little church house was packed with friends of the contracting parties and many were unable to get near the door. The ceremony was performed by Rev. G. R. UPTON, who had known the bride from childhood, and this fact added interest to the happy event. Two happier hearts were never united for "weal or for woe" and the beautiful bride, most worthily won, carries with her the heartiest good wishes of all the people of Evergreen, who are her friends. The large gathering attested the popularity of the interested parties, and the quick leaves-taking of the bridal couple on the afternoon train, gave but a short time for hasty congratulations and sad good-byes. Evergreen has never known a more charming girl than Miss ... [rest is missing due to my poor photograph]. More About STEPHEN R. His mother was Emma Stallworth, and I believe his father's name was William Stallworth. He had at least 2 Brothers, Terry & "Will" Stallworth. They moved to Detroit, Michigan, worked & retired from Crysler Motors, and moved to Pensacola, Florida or back to the Beatrice Alabama. He had 2 sisters, Annie Lee & Beatrice. Annie Lee lived in Monroeville, Alabama until her death some time after 1957. I would deeply appreciate you sharing your research, and pledge to do the same as I develop data. Thank you. Earvin

He had enjoyed excellent health throughout his long life and was only sick a short time before his death. It is said that he was unusually well preserved in mind and body for a person this age. He was able to recall with ease and in vivid manner much of the early history of this country. Up until his death he was able to look after the affairs of his farm home. He served faithfully as a soldier in the Confederate army throughout the war. A very striking thing about his service in the war is that he and one of his sons enlisted at the same time and both served through the war. Uncle Jack was a native of Conecuh County, having been born near Skinnerton. Many of his descendants and relatives now live in this county. He is survived by several children. Funeral services were held at Awin Sunday afternoon by Rev. Jos. Melton. A large crowd of relatives and friends were present to pay a last tribute to this excellent citizen."
