My grandfather's first cousin Bettie SALTER (b. 1894) married Thomas Lafayette SALTER (b. 1890). I was looking for Bettie Salter SALTER's obit in the old Conecuh Co. newspapers and found one for a Bettie SALTER who d. 1945; however, she (the subject of the 1945 obit) turned out to be the mother, not the wife, of T. L. SALTER. I believe the marriage you have in 1885 is the marriage of Thomas Lafayette SALTER (Sr.) to Bettie ANDREWS, parents of the T. L. SALTER (Jr.) who married my grandfather's first cousin. I found a Betty J. ANDREWS living near a Thomas L. SALTER in the 1880 census. 12-10-1931 Butler County News North Conecuh Rev. Mr. WEAVER filled his regular appointment at New Hope Sunday. There was a fine congregation and the attention was good. Prof. Claud HIPP conducted the song service and the pastor closed with a beautiful solo. Relatives and friends gathered at father Acie S. KENDRICK's Sunday to celebrate with him his 90th birthday. It would require so much space the writer will not attempt to give the names of all those present, but suffice it to say all his children and most all the grand children were present. It may be remembered that this old father in Israel was born in Conecuh county, Ala. not far from the home where he now lives. It is a joy and pleasure to sit in company with one who has lived such a pure and beautiful life. Evidently from the life he has lived he said like one of old: "For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." His children, sons and daughters, are in line with their honored father, walking in his footsteps. A Confederate veteran, one of the few now living in Conecuh county. The golden rays that follow an unclouded sun__? are in his work to adorn the sitting and the passing of a useful and well-spent life.--A loved one.

She is survived by many warm friends who watched with her during her suffering, the thought of which can but be oppressive to the memory of her many friends and relations in years to come. For many, many years she has occupied the position of a mother to the neighborhood, and we shall greatly miss her, yet live in the hope that our loss is her eternal gain. Our heart-felt sympathies are extended to the bereaved husband and children. A FRIEND. -------------------- May 22, 1890 The Star Married. Your information is very helpful. Since Andrew M. HOWELL was right next door to Samuel BROOKS and wife Susan (Howell) in 1880, I thought he was a good candidate to be her father, so I followed Andrew backward, and he did have a daughter named Susan the right age to be the wife of Samuel B. Brooks. Susan HOWELL and Samuel B. BROOKS named a son Andrew Britt (maybe after both their fathers). I find it very interesting that Andrew HOWELL had a Susan PARKER in his household in 1850 (Marion Co. Georgia). She could be his first wife Priscilla's mother, and Susan HOWELL could be named after her. (I recall that your Viney Jane MITCHELL married Samuel PARKER, brother of my g-gm Rachel Frances PARKER Hartley, but the Parkers are another story.) Anyway, Britton BROOKS (b. 1813-1820), father of one Samuel BROOKS (b. 1849), possibly the one who married Susan HOWELL in 1870, was next door in 1860 Butler Co. to Drury J. BROOKS and his father Samuel BROOKS (b. 1790). Drury J. BROOKS was four dwellings from my gg-gm Rachel BROOKS in 1850. I believe that Drury J. BROOKS is the first cousin of Drury William BROOKS, son of John Sawyer BROOKS, and believe both Drurys were named after Drury MITCHELL, but I really don't know how to prove that Drury J's father Samuel BROOKS was the brother of Drury W.'s father John Sawyer BROOKS, even though they were neighbors in 1840 Macon Co. Ga. There was even an older William W. BROOKS from Virginia beside them who is probably their father, but I can't prove that either. One big problem (among MANY in this Brooks family history) is that I cannot determine who is the father of Britton BROOKS. He is near Wm. W. BROOKS, John Sawyer BROOKS, and Samuel BROOKS in Macon Co. Ga. in 1840 (with some MITCHELLs and DRIVERs nearby). The biggest problem is that even if I could prove any of the above, that would not tell me if/how they connect to my Felix BROOKS. I really appreciate your input because the MItchell name comes up all the time in my BROOKS research, Your message today inspired me to look at them again.

SUBJECT: Witherington Cemetery Dedication Ceremonies in Conecuh County, AL on Nov. 5, 2005 I would hope that the below 1860 obit for Daniel E. Witherington can be read by one of the Daughters of 1812, while presiding at the dedication ceremony at Witherington Cemetery (CR #22) on Nov. 5. The fact that Daniel served with General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans is a very significant historical factor!!! Bill King ________________________________________ Obit Copied from an Undated 1860 Newspaper Obit found in the Witherington Family Bible..... DANIEL E. WITHERINGTON NOV 10 1827 AUG 29 1890 Private, Louisiana Militia War of 1812 "DANIEL WITHERINGTON died very suddenly at his residence in Conecuh County, Alabama. Mr. Witherington was a soldier under General Jackson and he helped to gain the noble victory at the Battle of New Orleans. He was one of the first settlers of Conecuh County, and was much respected by all who knew him; but the Angel of Death visited him while he was slumbering, in his usual health, and carried him away from time to eternity, without even a struggle. So an old soldier, a good citizen, a kind husband and an affectionate father is no more. C.W.S." Notes: The initials "CWS" would indicate that the obit was written by Cornelius W. Somerall, husband of Mary Haseltine Witherington (4th child of Daniel E. Witherington). Daniel was the son of WILLIAM WITHERINGTON, JR (Ensign in Missississippi Territory Militia, 17th Regiment, during the War of 1812) Daniel was the grandson of WILLIAM WITHERINGTON, SR (Patriot, American Revolution) ------------------- Also: From research of Virginia Witherington: Undated Letter to the Conecuh Weekly Star. "Dear Sir: You will please insert the following in the Weekly Star, if you see fit. DANIEL WITHERINGTON died very sudden at his residence in Conecuh County, on Tuesday morning the 21st of August, 1860. Aged 65 years, 1 month and 15 days." Bill King BillKing@houston.rr.com
