    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4R.2ADE/1649 Message Board Post: In a column of the local newspaper, Evergreen Courant, 1957 is an article about a Field Day celebrated at the Conecuh County Training School. It was held on May 8th, 1957 and it was a county-wide annual field event. On the same day every year, schools of Conecuh County journeyed to C.C.T.S. to participate in the many recreational activities planned for them. The morning activities began with a concert rendered by the C.C.T.S. band in the Campus Grove. This particular day began at 10 a.m. and everyone had gathered in the auditorium for the indoor activities. Greetings were extended by Supt. H.G. Pate; Principal O.F. Frazier and R.D. McCreary, Pres. Principals Assn. The C.C.T.S choir offered several numbers and Flutophone selections were given by Nichburg, Lime Hill, Rabb, Evergreen Elem., Sandy Grove, Nymph, Belleville, Castleberry, China and Butterick Schools. Two plays, " When We Grow Up" & "When Mama Went Away" were presented by the Special Class of the Evergreen Elem. Sch! ool. Mrs. Cleo Williams & Mrs. Mary Martin were the directors. Many of the schools presented action, songs and dance. Music by the Evergreen Harmony Boys, Mr. Reuben Lewis, Director. After the announcements and benediction, the students gathered on the field for the outdoor events by all the schools: May Pole Dance, 12 schools; Relay Races, all schools; and Square Dance, 20 schools. Many of the students won ribbons for their participation in events. Field Day was said to give young people the opportunities to exert energies and abilities. The Field Day was a success only because of the close cooperation between students, parents, and instructors and through the aid of others.

    1. DNA Geneology
    2. David Sigmon
    3. Hi, all, I'd like to suggest something to the group. There is something called the Sorenson Molecular Geneology Foundation. There are a couple of things that makes this Geneological DNA unique: 1) they use all of the DNA information, not just Y-chromosone or maternal mitochondrial DNA, 2) therefore, they need every one to send in their DNA, not just men, 3) It's FREE, they'll send you a free kit and will analyze it for free. However, you won't get any info back from them. Anyone can search their database for free by using their genetic markers, but you'll need to find out your genetic markers from some other company. To request a free kit go to: http://smgf.org/request_a_free_kit.html The non-profit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) is building the world's largest database of correlated genetic and genealogical data. Our database uses sophisticated DNA analysis to link individuals together, while maintaining strict confidentiality of participants' information. The SMGF database pursues the following objectives: Build the public database by collecting DNA samples and corresponding genealogies from throughout the world Make the information useful to genealogists by allowing public access to the database while maintaining the privacy of contributors Help people get past “brick walls” within their genealogies by providing information about specific ancestors to whom they are biologically related Create analysis tools to enable genetics to be used in new ways for genealogical research DNA samples with associated four-generation pedigree charts have already been collected from over 50,000 volunteers by SMGF. Up to 170 genetic markers (specific regions of DNA) are analyzed for each individual. The corresponding pedigree chart is also extended as far as genealogical databases allow; extended pedigrees currently include over one million ancestral records. The database will be released in stages. When each portion is ready for public release, free access will be available through the SMGF Website. The first database release, comprising paternal-line (Y chromosome) genetic data and corresponding genealogies, includes data for more than 12,000 individuals and hundreds of thousands of ancestors. SMGF also continually conducts research into new methods of using DNA analysis for genealogical research. A significant focus of our research is to identify and trace ancestral origins, with genetic identity defined by factors of demographic separation as well as by time period. We are also researching ways to use the inheritance models of various types of genetic data to trace different genealogical lines. We are experimenting with new genetic clustering algorithms, the statistical reconstruction of ancestral trees, the inference of ancestral genetic signatures, and the inference of surname based on paternal-line DNA. Please tell everyone you know. David Sigmon

Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/4R.2ADE/1646 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford. He was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He may have ended up at an orphanage or facility and at some point he was claimed and sent to live with a supposed “uncle.” This may have been in Florida. He questioned whether his claimer was a true uncle because he felt used as an indentured servant and this prompted him to run away with alleged “cousins.” He eventually migrated to Texas and the family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Have! ns on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. I found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name. The listing is: Hubbard, James D., age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie (nickname?), age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496, listing a William Wadferd. The listing is: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama, cannot write. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, Keeps house, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Single, Laborer, b. Alabama, cannot write. It appears 1880 William Wadferd is a boarder. As probably flawed as censuses were back then and despite the name spelling and age, this could be my g-grandfather and/or possibly Shelby County Willie Wadford. I also cannot locate any information on the Hammocks either. If you have any information or search suggestions, please contact me at NLCOMPTON@RMCI.NET

    1. Re: [ALCONECU] Reubin Butler Family
    2. Hi, I have an interest in the BUTLER family. I'm not sure we are talking about the same family because I don't see an Elizabeth in my notes, but there is a Reubin Butler married to a Nancy. I research the surname MORRIS, and I have this Butler Co., Ala. marriage in my notes: BUTLER, A. J. 20 & MORRIS, Ella 22; Lic. date 25 Dec 1880, marr. date 26 Dec 1880 at R. W. Martins by Rubin Butler, page 113, volume 1880-1882 [from Mary Smith] Notice AJ and Ella were married by Rubin BUTLER. I believe this Ella MORRIS died before 1900, and A. J. BUTLER remarried Martha Unknown. Somewhere I have census notes on one Andrew J. BUTLER living in Conecuh Co. in 1910 and 1920 (married to Martha) with children from first and second wives in his household, but I can't find those notes right now. I'm not certain the Ella MORRIS who married AJ BUTLER in 1880 is "my" Ella MORRIS, but I took some "just in case" notes on a family I believe is this AJ Butler's family. They lived in Butler Co. Ala. 1850-1870 and Escambia Co. Ala. in 1880. Does the document you have contain any information on Andrew J. BUTLER? Since you listed the marriage in your first posting as "Lafayette SALTER to Betty ANDRESS" under the title "Newspaper Accounts late 1800's," I'm assuming maybe there was an article about the marriage in a Dec. 1885 newspaper. I would like to read that one day. Next time I'm in Conecuh Co., I'll try to get to the library to look at the SALTER file. I was trying to determine if Bettie SALTER was related to her husband Thomas Lafayette SALTER.
