Sims, born in what looks like Luverne, Alabama. Mother: Says, N. Nancy Welch, born in Crenshaw, Rutledge. The informant was G. J. (Garnie J. Sims, son). There is a death record of Thomas J. Sims in Crenshaw County for Thomas J.; born 18 January 1852 and died 26 January 1911. The informant is Mrs. Ida Sims. There is a marriage record of Thomas J. Sims to Nancy J. Welch, married on 21 November 1872 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. Since this date is AFTER John Franklin was born so if I am looking at the right people, then Nancy can't be the mother of John Franklin. However, there is another marriage record of Thomas J. Sims to Ida Dismukes who was born 10 August 1859 and died 1 March 1925. Thomas J. and Ida married in Crenshaw County on 2 December 1880. It is entirely possible that Ida was the mother of John Franklin and died sometime after his birth in 1886 and the second marriage of Thomas to Nancy. If this is the case, it is entirely possible that John Franklin's children were not even aware of this so they would have listed the parents as those they knew. And of course, the flip side is that these are two different Thomas J. Sims as there is an entry on the 1910 County, Beat 4, Honoraville, Census with an Ida but it states they have been married only once and for 27 years. 3. Hello: I have a Sims ancestry but have only one bit of information. Sarah C. Sims married c1832 Talladega Co AL to James M. Kelley. They moved to Conecuh Co by 1840/50 and had a family there. My grand mother, Margaret Melissa Kelley who married James Johnson was their daughter. James Johnson was a son of John "Pealicker" Johnson and his first wife, Nancy Garlington Salter. Nancy was a d/o Samuel Salter and Mary "Polly" Cummings. Sarah C. Sims was thought to have been an orphan, but no information has been found on the Sims and Kelley families beyond the marriage in Talladega. There is a Kelley Springs in Talladega and a bit of information on some Sims names, but nothing found regarding Sarah. Would appreciate any help possible. Gertrude J. Stephens

    1. Sanuel Leander Witherington of Conecuh County, AL
    2. Bill King
    3. Excerpted from The Conecuh Record, Womans' Edition, Oct 24 1895.... S. L. WITHERINGTON Samuel L. Witherington was born in Conecuh County, Ala. His parents, W.L. Witherington and Nancy Johnson, were also natives of this county, and in the good old days of yore, well remembered among her most industrious, and highly respected citizens. It was from their early teachings that Sam (as he is familiarly called), laid the foundation that was in after years to make him a useful man and fit him for that sphere in life that he so gracefully adorns. Mr. Witherington was a few years ago engaged in the mercantile business, which he successfully terminated, to accept the office of clerk of the circuit court, by appointment from the Governor. He discharged the duties of this office so entirely to the satisfaction of the public that two years ago he became the candidate of the Democratic Party to succeed himself and was overwhelmingly elected to the white vote of the county. During the mean time, Mr. Witherington had thrust upon him the honor of becoming the chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of the county. His able management of that campaign fully testified his capability as leader in his party, to which he is always willing to give his time, talents, and money. ------------------------------- Below copied from the files of Bill King, Houston, TX.... Is this the line that you're looking for, or do you need more specific information on Monroe Cooper or the Elizabeth Creamer? There are two Coopers listed in the Conecuh Guards, there might be a connection there. He's listed in the 1860 Census as a Farm overseer, age 27, born AL Matilda Gilmore is listed as being 18 in 1860, living at home with her parents, John & Temperance Gilmore. Monroe is married to Elizabeth Creamer in 1874, so that doesn't leave too much time for he and Matilda, unless they got married soon after 1860 & she possibly died? Does any of this help you?

I was born in Conecuh County in 1933, and, though we moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1940, we did return to Evergreen quite often. As I recall, the camp was just to the right of Highway 83, about where the northbound entrance to I-65 is now. I further recall that the camp was used as a German prison camp during World War II. Of course, I may be wrong about this, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth into the pot (inflation is a factor). I do hope you got the information you were looking for from other folks a lot more knowledgeable than me. And if you have specific information about the camp, before, during, and after the war, I would certainly appreciate your sharing it with me.
