    3. Hello: Don't know about the Stokes family except as follows (from my Johnson book): Re Sarah Amanda Johnson Stokes: Descendants of only one son located in 1973 when the Johnson records were published. One contact stated that an Eli Stokes who married Mollie Cooper went to Breckenridge TX after War Between the States; that a colored girl hid in the wagon until they crossed the Mississippi and lived with them the rest of her life. Eli & Mollie reportedly had no children. He could have been the Eli Barnett Stokes in 1860 Conecuh census? Another contact (fm descendants of Mary E. Johnson Hill - sister of Amanda) stated that Eli Stokes was related. A Bible record notes that amanda died 25 Oct 1853 (prob should have been 1883). 1850 Census Conecuh Co AL: - "Sarah" is in HH of her parents. 1860 at Rural Hill: Levi age 35 amanda 30, Jno S. 6, Barnett 1. 1870 at Sepulga: Lemanda 32, Emily 8, Delila 6, Rosa 3. 1880 Mixons Beat: Amanda 40, Emily 18, Delila 15, Rosie 14. 1870 Marion Co TX: John S. Stokes17 in HH of John & Virginia Johnson, brother of Amanda. John S. m Henrietta Johnson, d/o William George Johnson, first cousin of Mandy. 1880 Hunt Co TX: J. S. Stokes 27, Mary 35, Barnett 6 (had to be a second wife (Mary ---) as Henrietta had died) . I have a couple pages more on the Texas Stokes. In an update of the Johnson family, I have: Emily Stokes b c1862. One Emma A. Stokes m 18 Mar 1883 Conecuh Co to William H. Varner s/o R. H. Varner. Delila Stokes b c1865 Conecuh Co - one Lillie D. Stokes m 9 Dec 1906 Joe T. Reid. Rosa Stokes b c1867 Conecuh Co m 6 Jan 1887 Conecuh Co To A. T. Ward. [One Mary E. Stokes m 31 Dec 1900 J. L. Crawford}. Since then I have heard from a descendant living in the Tuskegee AL area who sent a little information and was interested but did not have the time to research apparently. Maybe this will help someone and help me to learn more. Gertrude J. Stephens

This would be in the area of Janes Mill--Appleton area. There was a school located in the area between the years 1925-1932 on Castleberry Route 2 between the Weaver & Crawford areas. According to the archives information, three different names were used for this school: James-Janes-Jones. The church is located within a mile of the Janes Mill community. I am going to refer your query to another researcher who might be better able to assist you. Should you receive any further info/data, I hope you will share with us here at the library in Conecuh. Thanks.

There are some listed in Monroe/Conecuh County Marriages, 1833--1880; however, there were only 600 or so marriages from Conecuh, spanning the years from 1866-1876, Many of the same families settled in Monroe County, along the Old Federal Road. Many of the earliest marriage records along with other county records were destroyed in courthouse fires prior to 1865. I checked both the indexes and found no records matching the names you gave; however, we might check the family surname files and see if there is one included in those files.

The old gentleman was with his son, the Major, in his last illness and doubtless his grief at his son's death and extreme age caused the silver thread to break and let his spirit free to join his loved one. We think the Reverend is the son of the older Kedar, the one in the 1790 census of Robeson County, North Carolina. He as born in 1767. We know that my grandmother (X3) was Reverend Kedar's sister, and she was not the daughter of Joshua. He had a daughter named Sarah, but she married Ransom Dean. We do not know where the older Kedar (1767) was buried. We do know where the Reverend was buried and have photos of his grave site. He did not marry Eunice Wright, but the older Kedar may have. But we have no proof of that, but the age fits. Postings by the Wrights state that Kedar died in 1833; the Reverend died following the Civil War. In fact, he was in the Confederate Army at his advanced age. We have no knowledge of a Kaydon Hawthorne. There is a variation on the spelling of Kedar in the census of Conecuh county, but that person is too young to fit. Thanks for your response.
