Check out the great article at this web site: www.ashleycountyledger.com/articles/2004/06/22/history/aai7.txt Notes: ...Robert J. Withers was the Captain of the riverboat, The Morgan Nelson, during the Civil War. His partner (ownership of The Morgan Nelson) was our Augustus Levan "Gus" Witherington, son of William Witherington, Jr. and Sarah Sally Stanley. Gus was the younger brother of our John Witherington of Calhoun County, ARK. ...Gus was murdered at Moro Bay in Bradley County, AR in 1869, shortly after the Civil War. At the time he operated a store and the ferry across the Ouachita River between Moro Bay and Pidgeon Hill (in Union Co, AR). Anyone wishing to obtain added info on Augustus Levan 'Gus' Witherington or Captain Withers, please contact Bill King at the address shown below. Best wishes to all of you Witherington researchers. TO: Doc Lee and other Ellis Researchers...... Here's my best guess on this Ellis group that got to Butler about 1820.... Just a guess, however! But because of the Josiah Ellis & John Witherington connection.... and their getting land together in Butler/Conecuh Counties (straddling Duck Creek), Josiah MUST definitely connect to Mary Ellis (wife of John Witherington) in some fashion.... probably a brother of Mary's. Also, I do not believe that Kinchen was the son of Josiah Ellis... as their dob's are too close together. I believe there is a strong possibility that Josiah, Joel , Kinchen and Mary were siblings. <Just a guess, and if not siblings, certainly cousins.> I do not have their "probable" father's name.... but three possibilities are: Ebenezer, Benjamin and William..... but really don't know...... --------- Try this with your logic....... Family of 'Unknown Father' Ellis & ??? 1 'Unknown Father' Ellis Born Unknown - <maybe Ebenezer?, maybeWilliam?, or maybe Benjamin?> Possible Childrenof "Unknown Father" Ellis: ..... 2 Josiah Ellis 1789/NC - After 1860 ......... +Lucy 'Unknown' Ellis 1796 - 1870 ..... 2 Joel Ellis about 1790/NC - Unknown ......... +Martha 'Unknown' 1799/NC or SC - Unknown ..... 2 Kinchen Ellis 1800/NC - 1860/TX .......... +Lucretia White 1805/NC - Unknown ..... 2 Mary Ellis 1801 OR 1806/NC - After 1860/AR ......... +John Witherington 1801/SC - 1855/AR <Mary Ellis & John Witherington were my 2nd Gr-Grandparents> NOTE ALSO: ...Ellis names in South ALABAMA by 1818, Alabama State Census Ebenezer* Mobile Territory, AL, Conecuh 1818<< Ellison AL (Cherokee Nation), no townplace listed 1819 James Madison Co, AL, AL territory 1812, 1816 Underhill Madison Co, Huntsville, 1819 William* Mobile Terr, AL, Conecuh 1818<< William* Monroe Co, AL, Miss. Deed of conveyance dated 2 Feb. 1827, mentioning Ebenezer Ellis giving 5 year old slave girl to John & Mary (Ellis) WITHERINGTON --------------------- STATE OF ALABAMA, CONECUH COUNTY Ebenezer Ellis to John and Mary (Ellis) Witherington, one Negro girl named Lew, about five years old. In presence of James Witherington and William Witherington. Dated: 1 Feb 1827 by Nathan Hawthorn, JP/ Recorded in my office in Book Marked "B". page 87 on 2nd Feb. 1827. James Sampey, Clerk; by W. R. Bohing, Deputy Clerk. NOTE: Above deed of conveyance was later filed in Calhoun County, AR on 12 July, 1855 by James H. Means, Clerk. It is very likely that the Negro slave girl, Lew, was still living with the family in Calhoun County in 1855, and Mary Ellis Witherington was re-establishing ownership of the slave girl in her individual name, following the death of husband John Witherington in April 1855. Would appreciate any thoughts and/or suggestions. Kichen lived near Josiah over the years. Probably s/o Josiah Ellis. In that Joel Lee was from Smithfield NC, was about same age, got to Conecuh 1818, and Josiah Ellis got there 1822, that would be a good place to look for him! In that Josiah Ellis lived within a few miles of William Witherington, Got land with John Witherington, and never was more than 3-4 miles from Conecuh county, I would say there is a very good chance that he is related to the Ellis of Conecuh county. ******************* More notes ELLIS, JOSIAH AL Butler 7/28/1838 Cahaba 33916 AL1800__.055 NWNW 31/ 8-N 12-E No St Stephens AL Butler & Conecuh On Butler/Conecuh county line. While Mr. Roberson had been in feeble health for about a year, hopes for his recovery were only abandoned within the past few months. He fully realized that the end was near, and throughout the entire time of his intense suffering, no complaint passed his lips, but he was patient. He just trusted and was unafraid. His last days were lived in at atmosphere of fellowship with his Heavenly Father, and at times he unmistakenly communed with his children. The minister refreshed him, with a prayer during the last two days of his life. He became a member of the Ramah Baptist Church in his boyhood days. In passing away, his wife has lost a faithful companion, his church, an ardent supporter, his community, an unselfish worker. Mr. Roberson was married to Matilda Crawford, January 12, 1874, and they lived together 52 years. He was the last and oldest charter member of the Masonic Lodge at Burnt Corn. Rev. I.S. Ridgeway, his former pastor, read the beautiful burial service at the church and the friends of the deceased sang his favorite song, "Shall We Gather At the River?" At the conclusion of the service, the handsome casket containing the body of the good father was borne from the church by his six grandsons, to whom he had always been faithful. Sepulga Post Office Sepulga Baptist Church Sepulga Community in early Conecuh County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce" <mstroublejlw@bellsouth.net> Sent: Friday, January 28, 2005 11:34 AM Subject: Re: [ALCONECU] Sepulga Community or Sepulga Post Office The following is thought to have been copied from the book, "People and Places of Conecuh County, Alabama". On Sep 21, 1821 the post office was already operating in Sepulga with a Mr. Everatt serving as postmaster. The Legal description of the post office in Sepulga Conecuh Co., AL. was on the Northwest one quarter of the Southeast one quarter of Sec 27, Township 8 North, Range 11 East. It is not known how early this settlement evolved, but it was located on the stage coach road, and nearby the Old Federal Road that brought these settlers to south Alabama through Georgia and the Carolinas. Early settlers were Thompson Hamilton Coker, and Epsey Ann Grace. The Grace family was the earliest known settlers in northern Conecuh Co., having arrived from Georgia in 1812. Duncan McCall received his land grant at Sepulga for his service in the Creek Indian War, and Nathan Stucky was paying taxes on 62 acres in 1819. Other families were the Skinners, Johnson, Cook, and Etheridge. They located on the banks of their water source, Sepulga Creek. The land was low and swampy and flooded during rainy seasons. This lead to fever outbreaks over the years, but the residents stayed for over 60 years. The last record of a post office in Sepulga was on Sep 30 1859 with Waddy T. Means serving as its postmaster. In 1854 the Sepulga Baptist Church was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Association with J. T. Thomas minister and J. Jones serving as elder. The church had 33 members. In the early 1880's Typhoid fever occurred taking many inhabitants. The survivors then moved for safer higher grounds not prone to flood. ---------------------- Below was copied from Bureau of Lands, Government Land Office on-line records. Earliest land recordings for William Witherington, Jr. Cahaba Land Office: Wm Witherington Land at Section 10, T-7, R-11 in Conecuh County, AL. In all, there were 3 - 80 acre parcels, for a total of 240 acres. The Witherington land was a bit west of the Sepulga Post Office location, at Fork Sepulga.... at the convergence of the East and West branches of the Sepulga River. The Witherington family likely lived on these lands beginning about 1820, but just got around to recording them in 1833. The three Witherington parcels were all located in: Section 10, T-7, R-11 in Conecuh County, AL 1) W half of the NW Quarter 80 acres 2) E half of the NW Quarter 80 acres 3) W half of the NE Quarter 80 acres
Sorry thanks for telling me. The Legal description of the post office in Sepulga Conecuh Co., AL. was on the Northwest one quarter of the Southeast one quarter of Sec 27, Township 8 North, Range 11 East.
