    2. If Eugene was in US army on Dec 20, 1941, the widow, Sarah, probably would have been eligible for benefits, if any. A check with the US Army records might indicate the maiden name of his wife. I lived on Montgomery Ave in Sheffield at that time and recall a horrific auto accident that took place on Raleigh Ave. A car traveling north on Raleigh Ave probably at a high rate of speed did not make the sharp turn and tumbled all the way down the ravine and into the deep drainage ditch. I assume that the car was speeding because the engine, transmission, and other parts were scattered along the path of the car. I never knew whether or not anybody was injured, or killed but considering the damage to the automobile, and the distance the car rolled down hill and into that ten to fifteen deep ditch. This may not be the accident in which Eugene Pursley was killed but the time frame is approximately correct. Eugene was a PFC in the US Army in 1941 when he died in a car crash in Sheffield, AL. On his death certificate (which I have), he is listed as "Married", and his surviving spouse is given as "Sarah Pursley, age 16". Given their ages, Eugene could not have been married long. In fact, according to my grandmother, no one in the family knew he was married until he died. Any help you can give would be much appreciated. Where would a soldier likely be stationed near to Sheffield, AL? Is there a nearby base in Alabama or Tennessee? Does anyone know anything about Sarah (I assume it is likely she re-married at some point, but who knows)? Thanks Glenn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
