    1. Brown in ColbertCounty, Alabama
    2. bemillsap
    3. I am actively researching the James Brown family known to have been in Colbert County in 1880. The 1880 census for Colbert County shows: Brown, James b. abt. 1819 in either Tennessee or Kentucky Matilda b. abt. 1820 in North Carolina Theodore b. abt. 1868 in Alabama Nades E. b. abt. 1872 in Alabama Nades married Thomas M. Sanders in 1896 in Tishomingo County. In later census, she went by the name Esther and that's the name by which the family knew her. Two houses down is the family of John Brown 80 of Kentucky, Sarah 65 of Kentucky, and RAchel 25 of Kentucky. I'm curious to know if these could be the parents and sister of my James Brown. This would have been a second family for James Brown. In 1860 he and his first family were in Franklin County, Alabama Rock Creek P.O. James Brown 41 b. Kentucky. Sarah 42 b. South Carolina (Maiden name might have been Rutledge, unsure.) Mary 13 b. Alabama Lucinda 13 b. Alabama Elizabeth 12 b. Alabama John 10 b. Alabama Jane 7 b. Alabama Nancy 4 b. Alabama (My 2nd greatgrandmother) Isabella 2 b. Alabama The 1900 census for Tishomingo County, Mississippi shows John Brown (above with family) Brown, John C. 1850 Alabama Mollie Alabama Amalphus Felix Sept. 1889 Mississippi Ila (or Ida) B. Sept. 1891 Mississippi Willie B. Oct. 1893 Mississippi Lizzie Sept. 1897 Mississippi Tillie June 1899 Mississippi John's father, James is listed as living with his eldest daughter Mary and her husband Phillip Wallis in Tishomingo County, in 1920. As far as I can tell, most of this family stayed close to Colbert County, Alabama and Tishomingo County, Mississippi. This family may have been Native American. I would dearly love to find someone else of this line to exchange information. I look forward to hearing from anybody familiar with this line. Billie Molder Millsap bemillsap@sbcglobal.net

    1. Colbert County brick wall-Robert Elbert AVARY
    2. Betty Berry
    3. My brick wall for Colbert County is the death and burial site of my great-grandfather, Robert Elbert AVARY. His death would have been after 1911 and he must have died in Colbert or the area surrounding it. He was born in 1927 in Hall County, Ga to Jesse and Myriom Crumpton Avary. His son, Samuel Miles Avary married Hannah Elizabeth Roberson of Wayne County, TN and had my father, William Arthur Avary in 1884. I have written for the death certificate, but they say there is none available for that time. They later spelled their name AVERY. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Betty Avery Berry

    1. WALLIS/WALLACE in Colbert County, Alabama
    2. bemillsap
    3. Good morning, I am researching the Wallis name in Colbert County. I have seen it spelled several ways but mostly Wallis/Wallace. We spell it Wallis. My 4th greatgrandparents were John and Jemima Jackson Wallis . John was born about 1808 in South Carolina and Jemima was born about 1810 in South Carolina. They married in 1827 in Hall County, Georgia; and spent a good deal of time in Forsyth County, Georgia after their marriage. In 1860, they are in Franklin County, and by 1870 they are listed in Colbert County. Each time I believe they are in, or near, Rock Springs. Maybe that's where the county line moved, I'm not sure. 1880 Colbert County, Alabama John Wallace 63 South Carolina Jimima 60 South Carolina Phillip 17 Georgia James 30 Georgia Mary Coats 30 Georgia John 9 Alabama Andrew 7 Alabama Mary 5 Alabama Next door was my 3rd greatgrandfather Tira Wallis 46 Georgia Mary wife 32 Tennessee Josephene daughter 19 Alabama Florance daughter 16 Alabama Ora daughter 12 Alabama Samuel son 7 Alabama Oscar 3 son Alabama Luther son 5 months Alabama Also living nearby are my 2nd greatgrandparents John Robert Wallis Alabama Nancy Cameline Brown Wallis By 1900 John Robert and Nancy Cameline Brown Wallis have moved into Tishomingo County, Mississippi. I also know that Phillip, the 17 year old son of John and Jemima is married in 1900 and living in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. I have not been so lucky to find the rest. I would love to make contact with anybody researching these lines. I also have a number of Brown family members from Colbert County that I will include in another post. Hoping to hear from other researchers, Billie Molder Millsap bemillsap@sbcglobal.net

    2. Pat M
    3. Good Evening All, My name is Pat M. Mahan, and I am now the County Co-ordinator of the Colbert County, AL, ALGenWeb site on rootsweb. I am still in process of making sure that I do not erase anything that was on the site, but if you have any particular pages 'bookmarked' for the old site, they will need to be replaced. I would appreciate all of you taking a look at the web site. Let me know what you like, don't like, suggestions, etc. Believe me, I can and will use all the help I can get. http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcolber/ Some of you may know that I am the CC for Lauderdale County, AL, so you will have some idea of what to expect, eventually. There's no reason that the Colbert web site can't be one of the best on the web, even if it is a 'young' county, and if all of you are willing to share, we'll get it out there! I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you. Pat

    1. Lindsey
    2. Rolene Kiesling
    3. I have Polyanne Lindsey (1829-1882) who married George Hodge. Polyanne has been most elusive, although there are Lindsey families in the 1870 census and there are several possibilities for the father of Henry. The 1930 census shows a W. Henry Lindsey, born 1904, living in Wheeler, Colbert County; his wife is Elsie, children Margrett and William. W. Henry says he was born in Alabama. I checked the 1910 and 1920 and could not find a match, however, there are Lindsey families in the 1910 and 1920 census records for Colbert County. You probably need to read the 1910 census, after all, Henry is about 6 and therefore should be with his family. Rolene Kiesling, Groveland, CA

    1. WOODS Family in Sheffield, AL (1918 to 1928/29)
    2. Marilyn L. Arnold
    3. Looking for street address on the family of Louis Fellows Woods and his wife Willie (Willamina) McKibbon Woods. Louis (Louie) was an engineer on the Wilson Dam and worked for the War Dept. from 1918 to 1928. His federal service records indicate that he lived in Sheffield. We know where Louie was from his birth in 1872 to about 1915/6 (various) and from 1930 on (Falls Church, VA) (Louie was from Selma, Willie McKibbon was from Oxford and Montevallo, AL) The 1920/21 and 1925 directories do not have this family listed. Louie and Willie had two sons, Louis Fellows Woods, Jr. (b. 1911) and Robert McKibbon Woods (b. 1915), who would have been teenagers at least part of this time. Historically, this family has been associated with the Presbyterian Church. Q. Are there local volunteers who might look up land and/or tax records to get their street address (or other information) during this time frame? I am willing to do an equivalent lookup in the National Archives or Library of Congress for this volunteer (or these types of look-ups). Q. Are there HS or other school yearbooks, annuals that might have info on the two sons or pictures? Q. Specific archives on the Wilson Dam? and/or local historians on the Dam? Q. What other local suggestions do you recommend we try to find information on them in the Muscle Shoals area during this time frame? Please contact me directly, as I am not a Colbert Co., rootsweb member. Thank you very much! Marilyn Arnold
