I too have a Lindsey problem - mine is probably a generation earlier. I am looking for Polyane Lindsey (1829-1882) who married William Hodge. There appears to be more than one Lindsey family in Colbert County - would appreciate any help or hints that I can get. Rolene Kiesling, Groveland, CA
Hello everyone, My Colbert Co brick wall is my grandfather Henry LINDSEY born about 1904 in Tuscumbia. Don't know if Henry was a first or middle name. He lived in Amory, Ms at one time and worked as a clerk in a hardware store. Henry LINDSEY had a daughter Betty Louise born 23 Sept 1932 who was given for adoption. Would love to find my grandfather's family. Thank you. Linda Gowen

RESEARCH TRIP We are coming to this area 6/17 and 6/18 to visit the Wilson Dam and try to find the home of my friend Bill's father and grandparents, as they were in this area from about 1918 to 1929, while his grandfather worked on the Wilson Dam. We'll likely also be visiting the local libraries and the courthouse. Neither of us is familiar with this area (we're in the DC area), so suggestions on which city/town to stay in and/or specific hotels would be appreciated. We'd like something off highway (quiet) and one with rooms of good size/quality. A hotel with a river/water view might be particularly nice! Thank you very much! Marilyn

Hello List, My brick wall in Colbert Co. is Marion Hall, born abt. 1835 and wife Rebecca Burleson, they had daughters, Alabama, Edy, Mary Amanda, probably more children I just can't find them. I will really appreciate any little bit of info on this family. Thanks Sharon
I have been searching for my grandpa’s father for a number of years now. You wouldn’t think it would be that difficult, but I’ve found that information at the turn of the 20th century to be rather limited and with the loss of the 1890 census a road to no where. What I do know: 1. William Franklin (Frank) Chandler was born in AR in 1905 to “Frank” Chandler and Sarah M “Ada” Chambers Davis Dunn. “Frank” died after grandpa was born and Ada came back to AL, most likely Franklin Co as her parents were in Russellville. 2. “Frank” had a son from a prior marriage, Chester born 1895 TX, who must have come back with them. He later married Mary “unknown” who was born in AL. In 1920, they were in Yell Co AR. In 1930, they were back in AL living in the Bethel community. They had 4 children: Herbert, Juanita, Alice, and William. Chester died in 1933 and William was born that same year after his father’s death. 3. Herbert worked for the TVA and William lived in Muscle Shoals off Sixth Street. Their mother died in the 70’s and both Chester and Mary are buried at Gargis Cemetery. It’s my belief that “Frank” Chandler met and married Ada probably in Franklin Co. Ada’s 2nd husband, Walter Dunn, died in the early 1900’s and again she probably went back to her folks. I am relating this in hopes that someone can help me with finding the families of Herbert and William. My dad knows that Herbert worked for the TVA and stayed in the area. Dad also told me that William lived up the road from my grandparents. I’m hoping that information may have been passed down relating to “Frank” since Chester was about 10 years older than my grandpa and would have memories of his father. Any help would be appreciated. My gr gr grandparents, ADAMSON TANNEHILL SHAW (b. 1777 in Maryland) and his wife, FRANCES HAMPTON, reached the Abbie Community near Leighton in Jan. l819. At that time, this area was in Lawrence Co., but later became a part of Colbert Co. Their children were: Baldy, Henderson, Ephraim, Adamson Tannehill (my gr grandfather), Jessie H. Croom, Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah. I would enjoy hearing from any descendants of these children. Sincerely, Mary Shaw Makima native Colbertian now living in Huntsville, AL
Can anyone on this list recommend resources on the Wilson Dam and its workers? I am researching the family of Louis (Louie) Fellows Woods and his wife Willimina (Willie) McKibbon Woods who had two sons Louis, Jr., and Robert McKibbon Woods. They lived in the Wilson Dam/Sheffield area from about 1916 (?) to 1929, when they moved to Falls Church, VA. Louie was either a carpenter or engineer for the Dam (after working on the Panama Canal). In 1920 they were living at Wilson Dam (Census), but their home was later given as Sheffield (Louie's Federal service records). Specifically, I would be interested in: 1. Sheffield Yearbooks? The boys would have been in HS by the late 1920s 2. Sheffield phone books/City Directories 3. Pictures of the building of the Wilson Dam 4. Pictures of the community of Wilson Dam and Sheffield in the 1915 to 1930 time period. Any suggestions of similar information are welcomed. We are coming to Alabama in June and would LOVE to find the house where they lived in Sheffield. Thanks! Marilyn Arnold
Take a look at the UNA site, which is "A Virtual Tour of the TN. River". It has some old photos, history, and other information on the dams and the Tennessee River.
