Author: DanaSHolden Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/798.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Leighton did not have a courthouse--it is in Tuscumbia. You can find good information about the Leighton community in the Leighton News (newspaper) on microfilm in either the Florence Public library or the Lawrence Co archives in Moulton. I'll be glad to correspond to you privately about this because I may be able to answer some questions. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: drh2u Surnames: ROSS, BURNS Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/794.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Butch, Thanks so much for your help. Don't know what maps you are reviewing, but I found a definitive reference to Ross Chapel at the website: http://www.topozone.com/states/Alabama.asp?county=Colbert Scrolling down that page it refers to Ross Chapel (historical), and it gives the latitude (34.852 N) and longitude (87.964 W). Scrolling back up that page to Burnstown Cemetery, it shows a latitude (34.852 N) and longitude (87.963 W). That would indicate an immediate adjacency for the two... I suspect it was a church/cemetery site with the church no longer in existence. The Ross Family and the Burns families were linked by several marriages in the 1800's, so that may account for the connection. Unless you have maps other than those of topozone.com, it is unlikely you will find anything differently. Accepting that the church/chapel does not physically exist today but the cemetery has been surveyed: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/colbert/cemeteries/burnstown.txt The question becomes the source for the reference "historic". What History??? I will post to the Burns and the Ross Surname Boards to expand my query. Again, Thanks so much. Author: alabamamason Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/794.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have looked at the topo map and having hunted over most all the area in question, I could not recall a Ross Chapel. I called home to inquire as to where it is located and my Mother did not know where it is located either. I can say that the area is not a part of Pickwick Lake as shown on the map. I will check further. Butch Tucker Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DHeinz Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/794.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank You Pat. Another Website: http://www.topozone.com/states/Alabama.asp?county=Colbert allows access to topographical maps of Ross Chapel location as well as Lane Springs. Although within a mile or so of each other, they appear to be separate. A second Website: http://www.my-usa-data.com (a poor reference site and hard to navigate) shows Ross Chapel as a "historical" Alabama Church, but gives no other information. The areal photograph on that website seems to indicate that it is at or near the site of Burnstown Cemetery near the Medford Branch Stream that feeds into the Tennessee River. That areal photograph would indicated that it was not one of the areas flooded by the dam that created Pickwick Lake... Comparing the topographical map on the one site to the areal photograph on the other site, it is obvious that we are looking at the same location. Some of the mystery continues... Hope someone in the immediate area can help check it out. Dave drh2u@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Pat M Mahan Surnames: Ross Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/794.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: According to Sandra Sockwell's 1985 unpublished Master Thesis, "The Place Names of Colbert and Lauderdale Counties, Alabama", p. 498: ROSS CHAPEL. In Lane Springs, NE 1/4 of S35, T2s, R14w, approx. 6 1/2 mi. north of Cherokee (1895 and 1908 Bacon Maps). Local family. Judging from this information, it is possible that there may have been a family cemetery there at one time. It is also possible that the cemetery has been re-named, has disappeared due to whatever reason, or is so over-grown that access is impossible.
