I was raised in Sheffield, but now live in Las Vegas, Nevada. It used to be that the Tennessee Valley Historical Society was essentially the historical society for the Sheffield-Colbert County area. I don't know if they are still active. If they are, I would like to know who the contact person is. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <ALCOLBER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2008 7:02 PM Subject: Re: [ALCOLBER] Does Colbert County have a historical society? > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: carolemccaig > Surnames: > Classification: lookup > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.colbert/823.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I purchased a copy of > "The Heritage of Colbert County, Alabama" > directly from > Heritage Publishing Consultants > P O Box 67 > Clanton, AL 35046 > 1-800-568-1611 or 205/280-4100 > Fax 205/280-1607 > www.heritagepublishing.net > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Census records indicate that he had two daughters: Katie and Mary E. Bonds. Katie married Owen Keesee Cameron. I am searching for her date of death. Cemetery records indicate that she died in 1945 (when her husband died on 28 April 1945, he was listed as a widower). I have been unable to find her listed in the Alabama death index for 1945. I do not know who Mary E. Bonds married but I am sure that if she did marry she would have married in Colbert County, Alabama. The following is the current information that I have on the family: John Columbus Bonds (9 April 1836-12 December 1917) married (1)Allurah Celestia Barber (19 August 1853-1 October 1872) on 4 October 1869 in Chambers County, Alabama, and (2)widow Margarette Rebecca Hunter Fuller (4 September 1848-26 March 1914.note: tombstone has 19 March 1914 as date of death but death certificate indicates that she died 26 March 1914) on 28 September 1875 in Chambers County, Alabama, and later settled in Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama. The children of John Columbus and Margarette Rebecca Hunter Fuller Bonds were: Katie/Katie Bonds (1876-1945) married Owen Keesee Cameron (22 November 1870-28 April 1945); and Mary E. Bonds (born June 1881). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is very strange. I have an ancestor named "John the Baptist" Bonds and he had a daughter named Mary Bonds. But they were from Maury County, Tennessee. Peter's parents were James Helton and Nancy Horton, both born in TN. While researching my Helton line, I discovered another Helton family line. I believe the other Helton family was from GA. Not sure if they are related or not. I found a Henry Helton on the 1845 Territorial & State Census Tishomingo County Mississippi Name Males Females Helton, Henry 2 2 Helton, Peter 1 3 Helton, Nancy 0 1 Henry Helton did not live near Peter & his mother Nancy. I don't know if Henry was related to Peter or not. The Dewey Helton I am researching was a female, she was b. Dec. 1899 in Tishomingo Co., MS. She was the daughter of James Daniel Helton and Winnie Bell Busby. James Daniel Helton said his father was b. in GA. I do not recognize the name Membrance, Dicey or their sibling Henry Helton. Good luck on the DNA testing. One of my male Helton cousins participated in DNA testing for genealogical purposes. I have been focusing on the descendants of Peter & Thurzy Helton. Some of the other lines I am researching in Tishomingo Co. are McCoy, Parsons, Patterson & etc. I also have ancestors who settled in Hickman Co., TN. I have been researching those family lines as well. I have been traveling to Hickman Co., TN & Tishomingo Co., MS for the past few years to visit family & do genealogical research. I have heard family stories that we have Indian heritage. I believe a number of my male Helton cousins have been researching the possibility of Indian heritage. To my knowledge, nothing has been authenticated. As for my moniker, I have strong ties to TN. Judy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was looking only at Colbert and missed the family in Tish, Later on I found Dewey on the 1860 census for MS. I am trying to get a handle on all of the Heltons down in there. Do you have anything on Membrance Helton, Henry and Dicey Helton are brother and sister of his also? We may have a DNA test soon out of that line. Do you know anything about all of the Helton's out of a William over in Simpson Co. MS? In 1840 there are four families and you cant find them on ancestry and many other census lookups. You have to find them and look at the original records. Thankfully they all live close. I found some Cherokee Applications for William Joseph Helton b. 1799 in SC. He lived in Burnt Corn Monroe AL. I posted that information on the Helton Family Gen Forum. He had about 16 kids or more. Any help you might have post it and help some others. Thanks for being patient with me. Sunday, June 1, 2008 at 2 PM, Dr. Freda Daily will give a free to the public program entitled "Crime and Punishment in the West End," about law enforcement in the West End of Colbert County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a discussion of certain interesting cases. Dr. Freda S. Daily was born Freda Smith, a daughter of a fifth generation West Colbert family. She is a daughter of Cletus (Jack) and Flo Smith. She graduated as co-valedictorian of the Cherokee Vocational School in 1958 as Freda Daily, having maried Marvin Daily her junior year. In 1968 She enrolled at Florence State University to pursue her dream of becoming an elementary teacher. In 1976 she earned her masters degree, and in 1978 her education specialist degree, and in 1992 recieved her doctorate from the University of Alabama. She taught elementary school for twenty-two years and worked for ten years in several capacities in the Colbert County Schools Central Office, retiring as Superintendent of Education in 2003. Her interest in Colbert County history goes back to a term paper she was assigned to write as an undergraduate, "My Hometwon." Her love of West Colbert County history grew over the years and resulted in her first book A Heritage to Treasure: A History of the Old Chickasaw Nation of West Colbert County, published in 2004.
If this person died in Sheffield i n 1968, then it is likely they are in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield. The phone number is 256-386-5635. They maintain an index of graves. I'm sure the sexton can answer any questions.
