I don't know a whole lot about him yet. I am pretty sure that he was the son of Benjamin B. Howell and first wife Caroline Woods, son of Marmaduke Howell and Nancy Regan, son of Ralph Howell and Dicey Barfield. Some researchers try to connect him to Benjamin's brother Daniel, but Daniel and his sons moved to Florida after the Civil War and James M. stayed in Alabama. He married Frances Saphronia McCarty Averett after the War and they had three sons, Mack, Mark and my great grandfather John Simon Jeter Howell. He is buried next to Saphronia in the Averett Cemetery, but his grave is unmarked.
