I read this posting and it may as well be my Stephens.Do you have a Walter or Joesph Stephens?THis is what I know.My gg or gggreat grandfather owned/lived near the Pea River and Choctahatchee River near Elba Co and he owned a factory there that made syrup out of cane. The farryboats or barges would come through and ship it out.My great grandfather Joesph Walter Stephens lived in a place called Smutt Eye which is now Victoria. He was born in 1875.His obituriary said that he was a native of Pike Co.I haven't found him in any of that census but have in Coffee Co.I think that we might have something here.I am not sure who his father was but know of this story. And i believe that he had a brother or uncle that was in the Indian War.I have in the 1900's census a Amanda as my great grandfather Walter mother on the census. And in the 1920 when my granfather was about 4 she was listed as a widowed with the last name as Worthington. My great grandfather moved from Coffee Co because he was ! a minister also to Jackson Co.Fla near Marianna,Florida. He was married to a Minnie Lee Kendrick and my grandfather married a Hazel Lena Barrentine in Marianna,Fla.THey all later moved to Panama City,Fla.Do you think that this might be a connection to the masterpiece? Please e-mail me at:jjsteph@bellsouth.net
