My husband's Stokes family were in Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana and finally Illinois. Jim's father moved to Missouri where he married Jim's mother. Then Jim and his parents moved to Texas before 1930. Other branches of the Stokes moved South from Virginia and North Carolina. Stokes Co., North Carolina was named for one of the descendants of the immigrant, Christopher Stokes through his son, William Stokes. I have not made a definite connection to this family, but it appears likely that we are descended from a son named Silvanius/Sylvanius Stokes. My Coffee Co. connections are Watson and Byrd and possibly others who migrated from that area to Shelby Co., TX about 1883.
