Thanks for the info Nancy but I don't think this could be the right ones, the 2 you refer to would have been born in 1852 or 1854, the Opey we're searching for would have been born about 1823. Nancy, I love it when people interact this way, it usually opens lots of doors! The more I think about it the more I would bet that William G. Taylor, b. 1820 SC and Richard Opey Taylor, b. 1823 SC were brothers and that the Ope Taylor you found on the 1880 & 1900 census is the son of William G. Taylor and he was named after his uncle. It makes perfect sense to me. Maybe there are some Taylor researchers out there that can sort this out for us.
