Debra/Britt: I am researching this same Spurlin family (William J., Sr & Jr). Please take a look at the following: In the 1860 Coffee County census there were two (at least two, perhaps more) SPURLIN families listed, and they were next door to one another as follows: page 104 641/641 SPURLIN, William 54 M Farmer GA Elizabeth 47 F GA Sarah A 28 F GA Jacob 17 M AL Georgian 15 F AL KING, Rebecca J. 4 F AL 642/642 SPURLIN, Jr., William 31 M Farmer GA Celia 31 F NC Lucinda M 5 F AL Lisa L 4 F AL Elizabeth 3 F AL Martha 1 F AL KING, Sarah E. 4 F AL Notice of course the two KING children, one in each household, probably twin girls since the ages are the same. Rebecca KING is my great-grandmother, and I assume that Sarah is her twin sister. The mystery though, is "Where did they come from??" I went back and compared these two families in the 1850 census. They were basically the same except that a Riley, Polly, and Chloe from the elder SPURLIN family were now (in 1860) apparently out of the nest and on their own. Curiously however, 28 year old Sarah A. was still living at home. She is the oldest child in 1860, and was also the oldest in 1850. Could she perhaps have married someone during the decade, had two children (or more), become a widow, and moved back home? Her brother, the younger William SPURLIN, Jr., somewhat strangely perhaps, was living with yet another SPURLIN family in 1850, named Jeremiah SPURLIN. William, Jr. was 21 years old however, so he may have just been living at the other household learning something about the farming trade. Perhaps Jeremiah was an uncle or something like that. There is no clue as to why the second KING child is living with William, Jr. and family. "Tuesday 31 October 1810. On application, ORDERED that passport be prepared for the following person to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians, to wit, one for Messr. William Spurlin, from the County of Warren in this state, which was presented and signed." (Other passports issued on this order were: John Eady and family, Van Robertson and Micajah Brooks). This passport was likely issued to this William's uncle, William, since this William was only 3 or 4 years old in 1810. This may provide a clue, however, as to where in Georgia this family came from (Warren County). My obvious interest is the King children, but I would love to have whatever other information that either of you could provide on the Spurlins. I do know that Sarah eventually married (remarried?) a man named Levi Jayroe, but I know nothing of her offspring, if any. I look forward to hearing from you both. Regards, Warren
