Shelby, Judy/Judith Ann Taylor who married W. D. Powell is the daughter of William G. and Julia A Ryals Taylor, not Richard and Litha. The Taylor research group has this info and I feel sure they are correct. Winnette
There are no family trees in south Alabama, it's all a bunch of Kudzu :-) I just found another Taylor & Coon connection....Joseph Marion Coon & wife Lucy Ann Neal had a daughter named Mary Malissa Coon who married Noah Bowden in 1886. Now here's the connection...Noah Bowden's 1st wife was Permelia Taylor, daughter of William Taylor & Julia Ryals! Research never ends, always new discoveries, ain't it fun! Shelby
Thanks Winnette, You and the Taylor researchers may be right, but, I think it might behoove us to check this out further, if possible. It's too bad that brothers William and Richard Taylor felt compelled to name their daughters almost the same name when they were born so close together! I have the following info (based on census records, which I know are frequently wrong): William and Julia's daughter Judy is age 4 on the 1860 census and Judianne, age 12 on the 1870 census, this would put her birth year at 1856 to 1858 - does not fit the 16 Dec 1859 birthdate (per Taylor researchers and my records also). Now, Richard and Talitha's daughter is a one year old unnamed daughter on the 1860 census and she is listed as 11 year old Judea A. on the 1870 census, both these ages would indicate that she was born in 1859. Does anyone have access to William David Powell marriage records? Or, any other proof of which daughter he married, William's daughter or Richard's daughter. I've been looking to see who furnished me with my information and I haven't found the source yet, so until proven otherwise, I think Richard's daughter is the best fit to the puzzle of William David Powell's wife. Can anyone else please shed more light on this? Thank you Winnette!!! Looks as though my hunch was right, based on your information below, William Gardner Taylor and Richard Opie Taylor were brothers! And, William did name one of his sons Opie after his brother! Now to fill in some of the blanks for you about Richard Opie Taylor, b. 04 Mar 1823 SC (Patsy McCoy's new message to the List says born 1825), d. 04 Mar 1877.... his wife Litha was Talitha M. COON, b. 18 Feb 1831 AL, d. 14 Sep 1895, both are buried in the Taylor Cemetery, Coffee Co., AL. Talitha "Litha" Coon was the daughter of James E. Coon and Sarah Roe. Children (8 per 1860 & 1870 Coffee Co., AL census) were: 1. Sarah Taylor, b. 1852 Coffee Co., AL 2. Mary Taylor, b. 1854 Coffee Co., AL 3. Martha Taylor, b. 1856 Coffee Co., AL 4. Judie Ann "Babe" Taylor, b. 16 Dec 1859 Coffee Co., AL - married William David Powell 5. Jefferson Taylor, b. 1861 Coffee Co., AL 6. Julia Taylor, b. 1863 Coffee Co., AL 7. James Taylor, b. 1865 Coffee Co., AL 8. Joseph Taylor, b. 1867 Coffee Co., AL If anyone else can add to this information it would be appreciated. Shelby, I agree. We could all do well to share on list and help each other. There just are not that many that will do so. I have learned far more sharing on lists than any census can do. After all, two heads (or more) are always better than one. Winnette
Nancy, Not living in Alabama makes it difficult for me to determine the correct families. I just have census to help. There is a Richard Opey Taylor born 1823. This is all I know about him. This and other data is why I concluded that both Richard Ope and Judith Ann were children of Wm G. & Julia A. Ryals Taylor. Anyone have a copy of marriage records showing the parents? I was simply using the process of elimination, but, could be wrong too. Nancy, I love it when people interact this way, it usually opens lots of doors! The more I think about it the more I would bet that William G. Taylor, b. 1820 SC and Richard Opey Taylor, b. 1823 SC were brothers and that the Ope Taylor you found on the 1880 & 1900 census is the son of William G. Taylor and he was named after his uncle. It makes perfect sense to me. Maybe there are some Taylor researchers out there that can sort this out for us. Winnette, It appears to me that the Ope that you are referring to is the same one that appears on the 1880 and 1900 census that Nancy Copes wrote about: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Copes" <necopes@yahoo.com> To: <alcoffee@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 1:15 PM Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] More COON connections in Cool Springs Cemetery See if these sources refer to Richard Ope. 1880 he's R O and 1900 Ope R 1880 Alabama > Coffee > Elba > District 43 Family #355 R.O. Maybe my Opey Taylor, born in 1823, is a brother of William G. Taylor, born in 1820. Do you know if that's possible? Thanks for the info Nancy but I don't think this could be the right ones, the 2 you refer to would have been born in 1852 or 1854, the Opey we're searching for would have been born about 1823. One might say that the 1880 & 1900 ones could be the son of Opey that was born in 1823 but a child by that name does not show up on the 1860 or 1870 census so it's possible, but not probable. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Copes" <necopes@yahoo.com> To: <alcoffee@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 1:15 PM Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] More COON connections in Cool Springs Cemetery > See if these sources refer to Richard Ope. 1880 he's R O and 1900 Ope R > > 1880 Alabama > Coffee > Elba > District 43 Family #355 R.O. Hi Marlin, According to my records Martha M. Buford was the daughter of Mary Jane Coon and Simeon Buford. I show that she was born 02 Apr 1828 in AL and died 23 Aug 1907 in Polk Co., TX. She married Henry Kelley probably around 1848, they first appear on the 1850 Coffee Co., AL census: HH#67- Kelly, Henry - 30 GA female - Martha - 21 AL male - Simeon - 1 AL They had moved to Newton Co., TX by 1860 and appear on the census there with 6 children. They were still in Newton Co., TX in 1870, but by 1880 they were in Polk Co., TX. A lot of my information about Mary Jane Coon & Simeon Buford came from Joanne Truman, they were her 3X great grandparents (I think). Hope this helps, Shelby ----- Original Message ----- From: <mhp26@comcast.net> To: <alcoffee@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 10:39 PM Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] More COON connections in Cool Springs Cemetery > Hi, I see that you are interested in the Coon family.
