    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: WilliamRParker Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.coffee/1791.2.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Chestnut Grove is several miles West of where Simmons Mill was located. I have family buried at Chestnut Grove. It is easy to find. Go south from Brundidge on 125 into Coffee Co. to Clowers cross Rd. take right and it is not far on Co. Rd. 111 Dorkas Church on right and across the road is Chestnut Grove. When you go to Elba from Brundidge on 125 there was a curved bridge that crossed Pea River. The bridge was J.B.Simmons bridge. The bridge has been torn down. Just wondering if this was some of the same Simmons. I was from Elba. 1. [ALCOFFEE] Disturbance...NOTHING IS CHANGING
    2. Phyllis J. K. Owens
    3. First, I would like to apologize that my email caused such a disturbance on this list. I originally posted merely to let everyone on the list why if I should poof. I reacted in the manner that I did for I have truly had my hands full this year with the death of my husband and my having to take the reign alone in my business and home activities. Second, Lauren subscribed to the ALCOFFEE list, wrote her email to me and unsubscribed within three hours. I do not see how we need improvement on our list. We send out queries, queries are answered and we talk off subject about things like "footwashings in churches", "homemade ice cream" and "the making of lye soap" when things get slow. None of her suggestions would cause more subscribers..isn't that the point...more subscribers to share more info. And I think the one thing that stirred me up the most is that she called the public "simple". Third, I hope this will be the last post on the ALCOFFEE mailing list concerning this issue. IF you wish to respond to this email, please write me at kwanja@centurytel.net Thank you. You all take care now..... Phyllis J. K. Owens

    3. You know, the internet, e-mail etc. is a wonderful thing, except that it doesn't have the advantage of tone of voice and body language. A lot of times, something is written, that isn't meant to be hurtful or said in a mean way, but is taken that way by the receiver, because they don't have the advantage of reading the other signs. I honestly don't think she really meant to be harmful and that was very nice of her to reply to you. You have done a wonderful job.

    1. Re: [ALCOFFEE] Constructive Suggestions
    2. Debra Crosby
    3. Phyllis and listers, I think we all agree that you Phyllis do a wonderful job with this list. However that does not mean that there is not room for improvement and growth. I personally did not think that you were under attack as you seem to have taken it. Seemed to me as if this person was offering a few suggestions which might actually should have been considered. For any who do not know, a welcome message and a tag line are indeed diifferent. A welcome message is received one time only, when you first subscribe and you can include many details in that message. A tagline is something that is added to every single email that is sent out to a list and in my own opinion should be kept short especially since most people who reply to messages usually leave the entire message in tact and after 4 of 5 replies you can have a huge email with nothing but repeated taglines. Though the mention of PayPal in your previous tag line never bothered me, as I am aware that you don't have to "buy" into getting on the list, I can see why others might think it misleading to have it on the tagline. I really don't think Lauren was doing anything more than making a few useful suggestions to you and I hate so see a list member being under attack because they dared to make suggestions/comments. I don't think that is what this list is about either. We all think you're a great list manager and don't want to see you give up the list simply because someone suggests you could make the list better. On the other hand, I certainly now know that if I should ever choose to make a suggestion that something on list could be better, I would immediately come under attack by you and other listmembers who would take it as a threat. Please Phyllis and listmembers, rethink this, should Lauren be treated as such for making suggestions, also keep in mind she had the decency to make those suggestions private. Phyllis it was you who made the email and suggestions public. Debra Crosby -----Original Message----- From: alcoffee-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:alcoffee-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Phyllis J. K. Owens Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2007 4:43 AM To: alcoffee@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] Stepping down Thank you so very, very much for your kind words of support. I want you to know how very much I appreciate them and all of my ALCOFFEE mailing listers. We ARE a great group of people who try very hard to help one another with our research. Heck, sometimes we do get a little off subject....but that is what adds flavor to our li'l list family. I will not change anything or the way we do it. If they do not like our list, they can de-moderate me and watch the list go back down to 10 subscribers as it was when I adopted it many, many years ago. (We have over 220 right now!!) But I do not think it will come to that. She/he backed down QUICKLY with my response, and wants no part of our list administration. You have probably read my post after she/he wrote me back. I have received many emails personally since I posted tonight. I am writing each person back personally. I just want you all each to know that I love you all more now than I already did before. We are a clannish lot of "simple" folks. LOL! Again, thank you kindly for your kind words, Mr. Marlin. ALCOFFEE mailing list will not change as long as I am moderator of it....and that is a promise. And you please take care now..... Phyllis J. K. Owens

    2. Hi Sandy and all, I believe there was a Sawmill in New Broxton ca 1920's, My GFather DeWitt Grimes worked there before going to Brundridge to work at the sawmill there. Good luck PS Phyllis, You are doing great things for Coffee Co. listers, do not let someone get under your skin :-) Your Friend and thanks again for all you do for this mailing list, and all you do for Coffee Co. researchers. Perhaps he was a foreman at Mr Simmons mill? Any thoughts on this sawmill being the same where Shep was employed? Oh, and Phyllis you are doing one fine job. 3. Phyllis, I am not aware of the conditions that are placed on mailing list moderators by Rootsweb, or if there are any other entities that impose performance requirements or restrictions, but I am very aware of the excellent service you have provided and are providing to the members of the ALCOFFEE email list. I don't know the difference between a tag line and a welcome message, but if you need to tweak one or the other to preserve bandwith at the server level, so be it, but please don't stop providing those of us who are veterans of the list with the same level of information that you have been providing all these years in whatever manner works for you and Rootsweb. I have been a member of the list for a number of years and have always found you to be an excellent moderator with a keen sense of when to intervene in the flow of information and a style of doing so which reflects traditional Southern diplomacy. Further, I have never taken your occasional mentions of the PRH&GS, membership in that organization, or the publications and events offered through it to be any thing more than your advising the reader of additional opportunities for research and the support of same. Please count me in as one of those individuals who is "COMFORTABLE HERE" and don't even consider going "poof"!! We all need you! There is no information, rules, etc. in your welcome message. However, your tagline set for the list is inordinately long and repeats what Rootsweb autogenerates regarding unsubscription. It uses a lot of bandwidth with each message. It is no longer necessary to include -L in any Rootsweb address since the switch to Mailman software from Smartlist software last year. Although we admins have a lot of leaway in making rules and designing taglines, we are not to include solicitation of funds. We are not to allow selling of things on our lists -- dependent upon what our agreement with the ListMaster may be. County lists are not genealogical society lists -- non-profits have a bit more leaway in regards to "selling" things. Paypal does not belong in any tagline. Your current tagline may cause some to feel they MUST pay dues in order to subscribe to the County list. The public are simple folk. It is up to us to ensure clarity -- no need to pay dues to subscribe to this or any Rootsweb list. My suggestion would be that you pump up your welcome message with details and paramenters for what is on topic for the list and what the rules are and minimize your tagline. 3. There is a newly posted photograph for the Simmon's Sawmill. Mrs. Betty Thompson (our newest ALCOFFEE mailing list member) was kind enough to share it with us. There is a copy of the original and the restored copy that I worked on to clean it up abit. The webpage is located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcoffee/subphotos.html Mrs. Thompson would like to know if anyone knows what became of this land...who owns it and who all have owned it for the last eighty years..??? That was 300 acres of land!! Any ideas or knowledge about this out there with someone on the list would be appreciated. Thank you all for your time. You take care now..... Phyllis J. K. Owens

    3. Thank you so very, very much for your kind words of support. 3. The email below here just arrived to me. I will be honest with all of you folks and let you know what my reply was to this email: "I have been moderator of this list for around ten years. You are the first person to ever mention any of the above. We have had no problems on our list. Do you wish to moderate this list? If so, I will gladly step to one side to allow you to do such. Sincerely, Phyllis J. K. Owens" So if I go poof as your ALCOFFEE mailing list moderator, you will know why. I have too much to do with my life, all the lists and websites. If this person wishes to take the reigns here, he/she is more than welcome. But I will admit that this is the best mailing list that I moderate. I enjoy all of your posts. We do not post in the "normal" modes as most mailing list....the fact is "WE ARE COMFORTABLE HERE". I am sorry for this disruption in your email boxes. Thank you all for your time. Phyllis J. K. "visit the Coffee County ALGenWeb Project website http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcoffee and the Pea River Historical and Genealogical Society at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alprhgs " Delete "To unsubscribe send email with word unsubscribe in the text area to ALCOFFEE-L-request@rootsweb.com" as it is redundant to what Rootsweb adds at the end and it is inaccurate. ALCOFFEE-request@rootsweb.com is the address to use for unsubscription of either list mode or digest mode now. >==== ALCOFFEE Mailing List ==== >To unsubscribe send email with word unsubscribe in the text area to >ALCOFFEE-L-request@rootsweb.com > >Come visit with us to research and know our people and history of Coffee >County, Alabama.....you will find us downhome and most friendly here. >Also, while online, please visit the Coffee County ALGenWeb Project website >at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcoffee and the Pea River Historical and >Genealogical Society at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alprhgs >Please support our PRH&GS with your annual membership by submitting $20 to >PRH&GS, Attn: Phyllis J. The rest of the welcome message already describes the important addresses and URLs for the mailing list, so you don't need to include any of that kind of stuff here. This should just contain mission-specific kinds of things, like etiquette policies or team orientation, or that kind of thing. Note that this text will be wrapped, according to the following rules: Each paragraph is filled so that no line is longer than 70 characters. Any line that begins with whitespace is not filled. A blank line separates paragraphs. ................................................. Your welcome message can be much longer and give far more detail than what you currently put as a tagline.
