Posted on: Coffee County Alabama Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Coffee/10300 Surname: Adams, Sapp, Coon ------------------------- Sue, I believe we have spoken before because we usually get an invitation to the reunion in Kinston. The Nancy Catherine that you speak of in the census record, was the sister of Andrew Jackson Adams, my G. Grandfather, her nickname was "Tine". We are unsure if she ever married. We have been told that she had a daughter named Emma. Also family lore says that "Tine" was blind. We last find her in 1900, she was living with her nephew Calvin Jackson Adams, son of Andrew Jackson, in Hallton, Covington County. We feel that there is a very close relationship between James and your David F Adams. We have found them living near each other in several census records, if not him, Darling. In fact a family history, taken several years ago, that was done from talking to the elders in our branch, state James had a brother named Darling. We are just missing that one piece that will link the two families for certain. James was b. abt. 1802 in SC and married Christina Sapp in 1828 in Henry County, Alabama.

Which Shepard? I descend from Dessie Louisa Sheppard (also known as Icey) who was born May 7, 1843 in Barbour Co., AL. She was the daughter of William Henry Sheppard and Jane Oliver. Dessie married William S. Helms in Barbour county. He and others moved to Coffee County in the 1880's. Some of the Sheppards probably did, too - it was a pretty large family. I sure hope that someone out there reading this can shed some light on who the Shade Dykes is that appears on the 1850 Barbour County census. The problem is that there is also a Shadrick Dykes with a wife named Elizabeth on the 1850 Covington County census. Note that Shade in Barbour was 28 years old and born in GA, the Shadrick in Covington was 46 years old and born in SC, and all the children's names are different. The little 2 year old Nancy in Covington County was my great great grandmother. Listed below is what the census says for both counties, can anyone help?...Shelby The 1850 Barbour census shows this: Dykes, Shade age 28 GA Eliza age 25 GA William age 4 AL Mary age 2 AL Sarah age 4/12 AL The 1850 Covington census shows this: Dykes, Shadrick age 46 SC Elizabeth age 24 NC James age 7 AL Elizabeth age 4 AL Nancy age 2 AL

Posted on: Coffee County Alabama Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Coffee/10293 Surname: Sawyer, Crumpler ------------------------- I am now posting this to Coffee County in hopes of finding someone researching this family. Thanks in advance. >>>> Does anyone have any Lammons in their family tree? I received a copy of family information today. It is noted as: Smith side of family - from Lammons family records grandmother - Maryann Rebecca Smith Duncan Lammons married Ann McColosky Children: Sara Ann Lammons (McEachern) Ann Lammons (Barnes) Mary Lammons Martha Lammons (Glen) Daniel C. Lammons Mary Ellen Lammons Eliza Lammons John Lammons Frances Caroline Lammons (Smith - husband Jim died 1909) James Daniel Lammons ( I do have dates too, if anyone wants them) Maryann "Mollie" Rebecca Smith is my gg grandmother that married Wilburn H. Snell (Dale County Snells). From family information, Mollie's father was James "Jim" Smith. There is an identical headstone next to Mollie with J. F. Smith and I have been told this is her father. Mollie's son, Jamie (my g gf) went to live with his grandmother Smith (actually ran away, as told by his daughter, my g aunt). On the 1910 Geneva County, AL census Jamie is living with his parents. On the 1910 Holmes County, FL census, Jamie is the nephew in the household of Bertie C. Smith and his family, which includes Bertie's mother "Faney C. Smith". (My g gf was counted in two 1910 census. The Geneva one was taken 4/15/1910 and the Holmes County one taken 5/5/1910, so he must have left between these two dates). Back to the Lammons, it is thought to be connected to this family through "Faney C. (?) Smith. Any help or insight would greatly be appreciated. I am posting this to the Dale, Holmes, and Geneva boards, since I do not know where the Lammons family would have been. Thank you. Gale Stafford-Wall

Posted on: Coffee County Alabama Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Coffee/10290 Surname: Winding Water, Stevens, Cole, Hutchison ------------------------- I am also researching Stevens. Her name was Lizzie Cole Stevens. Unknown at what time she carried either of those surnames. She was full fullblooded indian...indian name was Winding Water. She would have been born around 1875. She was my gr grandmother. Her married name was Hutchison. She lived in Coffee Co., AL and one of her children was born in Ozark, Dale Co. and some in Troy and Tennille. Her husband was Ollie C. Hutchison and some of her children were Noah Louis (my grandfather), John Elijah, Ike, Dock, Clem, Chester, Cossie, Nolar (sp), Eunice, Dora Mae. Lizzie's surname is listed as STEVENS on all of the SS applications I have received, but she is listed as COLE on my grandather's obituary.

Posted on: Coffee County Alabama Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Coffee/10286 Surname: STEPHENS, STEVENS, BROXSON, BROXTON, STAPLETON, SPEARS ------------------------- Hubbard STEPHENS/STEVENS a vet of Rev. War had wife, Margaret; they had at least 4 children by an 1803 Last Will and Testament he filed in SC. He moved into GA and later into what would become known as AL. He and son, Lemuel, poled a boat or barge up the Choctawhatchie River and down to the Gulf Coast to bring supplies from Pensacola. Son, William, married Rebecca BROXSON/BROXTON in GA 1813 and they lived at the juncture of Choctawhatchie and Pea Rivers during the time periods that area was under the governments of Henry, Dale and Coffee County, AL. This area is presently in Geneva County. Rebecca appears as the head of household in 1850 with her children: William, George, Thomas and Robert STEPHENS. There is also listed Lydia Ann STEPHENS, but she could not be a STEPHENS, as William is not with the family in 1840 and Lydia was not born until 1842. Also with this family are two orphaned girls, Elizabeth SPEARS 12 and Margaret STAPLETON 7, both born in AL. This entire group, except William (the younger), including the orphaned girls, would move to western LA about 1856-1857. William appears on the 1850 and 1860 census of Coffee Co., AL with wife, Letia Mathilda; sons: Clark & William J. and daughters: Sally and Rebecca A. STEPHENS. Did they eventually move away also ? The land around STEPHENS' Ferry Crossing was patented by members of the STEPHENS family and they apparently operated the ferry there, since both the road and crossing bear their name. The Tract Book in Geneva shows the owners of these tracts to have been unknown, since the records of Coffee and Geneva County were destroyed. That should not have changed the listing if it where a U.S. Tract book, so I am more inclined to think this is a County Tract book. They intermarried with families from Holmes and Walton Co., FL as well as AL counties. Can anyone shed any light on this family while they were in AL ? Why did they leave ?

FYI... I rec'd the 4/3/01 issue of Family Circle magazine in the mail yesterday. Just now reading through it and on the first few pages is an article about Ellis Island. It states a web address for people to search, access and download immigration records for family who may have enter US through NY harbor. It is www.ellisislandrecords.org The article says to simply enter a last name and the database will hunt for spelling variations to gain access to 11 fields of info: immigrant's given name, surname, ship name, port of departure, arrival date, line number on manifest, gender, age, marital status, nationality and last residence. (Quoting the article)For a fee, you'll also be able to obtain a reproduction of the actual ship's manifest on which your ancestor's name appears and/or a photo of the ship on which he/she arrived in the US. Address to write them: Ellis Island Foundation,Attn: Records Research, P.O. Box Ellis, New York NY 10163 Phone # 212-883-1986 The article also says that the National Archives and Records Admin. site contains links to other online genealogical resources. www.nara.gov/alic/rayd/genealog.html#resource I think everyone who is doing research would find this useful and also interesting. So I wanted to share this with the list, because you have share your useful info with me and everyone on the list.
