Hi!! I'm now trying to verify my Gtgrandaddy Mack's parentage! I recently located what I believe to be his family in Coffee Co and have rec'd two trees pertaininig to them. Oh!! Sorry, who am I talking about!? Thomas Mack Sylvester HENDRIX, b. June 5, 1864, was(I think!) the son of McSewell and Jane Wilkerson HENDRIX. McSewell was KIA in the CW and Jane raised her family in Coffee Co. In the info I've found, no TMS appears, only a 'Matt'. I think this may be a misspelling of Mack, but this remains suppostion. Grandaddy Mack was a brother of King Zalma, so that is what really appears to be the firm link. Do any of you have anything further on King Zalma or a younger brother, Mack?+ God bless, Carolyn ----- Original Message ----- From: <ALCOFFEE-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ALCOFFEE-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 26, 2001 11:00 AM Subject: ALCOFFEE-D Digest V01 #201
I descend from Robert Hart, brother of Joseph/Josiah Hart, and I have done extensive research into the family. The names are not all listed on the marker. The marker reads as follows: "Joseph Hart & six members of his family were massacred and buried here in a common grave in the fall of 1835-36. The lone survivor was a two year old daughter Mary (Melissa) Hart. She married George Marlow." I have a jpg picture of the marker that I took earlier this month if anyone is interested. Email me off list & I'll send it to you. LCR "Robert D. HART FAMILY OF 1836 In Coffee County, Alabama about 5 miles north of Samson, Alabama in the Holley Mill Community is located Weeks Assembly of God Church. The Church was set in order on December 24, 1933. The first church was built across the road from the cemetery which had already been in existence for almost a hundred years. John Allen Weeks donated the land an the lumber for the construction of the first church building. The Church remained there for the next twenty years. In 1953, the building was moved to a site adjacent to the cemetery on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ezell and Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Holley. Among the first persons to be buried in the Weeks Cemetery were seven members of the Hart family, buried in a common grave - all victims of the Indian Massacre of 1835-36. Under the sponsorship of the Kinston, Alabama Ruritan Club and the untiring efforts of Lelon and Grace Weeks and Coffee County Judge Marion Brunson, a historic marker in memory of the Hart Family was placed on July 0, 1983. I am not certain if family members names was placed on this memory marker. They very well could have been. Your Melissa Hart is most likely one of these. Shelby, I think that you and I have talked before. I descend from Fair Gunter's son, Washington Gunter, brother of both George and Matilda. Washington went back to Marion County, GA for a while after serving in the Civil War. I have not been able to find him anywhere after the mid 1870's. I would also like to know more about what happened to Fair after he moved to Clarke County, AL. Needless to say, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Betty, I'm looking for JONES family info., but more in the timeframe of 1865-1890. Specifically, I'm looking for my g-gmother Georgiann Rebecca JONES b: abt. 1867/68. Her parent's names are unknown to me , but she married John Carlton CARPENTER. My gfather John Littleton CARPENTER, was b: 30 Sept 1889 in Elba, Coffee, AL. I found JC and Georgiann, aka Becky living in Orlando on the 1920 census and if the census is correct, she was born in AL. I can't find their marriage license and of course no birth certificates...so I have nothing to go on for the JONES family. I feel fairly certain there must have been continued ties to Coffee Co., because one of their children Shep CARPENTER (1900-1922) returned to Elba and was killed in a sawmill accident and is buried at Danley Crossroads. The reason I'm taking a stab at this, is because your Rebecca JONES, jumped out at me in your posting. Could there be a remote possible link? Sandy Mowery Central FL

Posted on: Coffee County Alabama Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Coffee/10335 Surname: JONES, SIMMONS, PATRICK, GUNTER ------------------------- Henry D. W. Jones (b. GA 1804/05) married MARY A. SIMMONS (b. NC 1803/04, d/o of William Simmons). They and their children are listed on the 1850 Coffee Co., AL, census. They are on the 1830 Pike Co. census, and 1840 Dale Co. census, but could have lived in the same place - only county name changed as new counties were added. One daughter, REBECCA JONES b. 1836, m. GEORGE GUNTER, s/o of Fair Gunter. Another daughter, EMILY JONES b. 1834, m. SOLOMON PATRICK.(Emily and Solomon are in Mobile Co. in 1860 with 5 children, but cannot find Emily or Solomon or 2 of the children again - 3 of the children seem to be living with Henry D. W. in 1870). There is another daughter, ELIZABETH JONES, b. 1837/38. Would like to find information about who she married and what happened to her. And there was another daughter, ELIZA JONES. I cannot find a record of her past the 1850 census, when she was a child. Also, I am looking for information on the oldest son, WILLIAM H.JONES b. 1832. I cannot locate him between 1860 (possibly in Mobile Co. then) and 1900, when he appears on the Leake Co., MS, census with a second wife. It seems he was married first in 1853 - probably in Coffee Co., AL. On the 1860 Mobile Co., AL, census, there is a W. H. Jones living next door to the George Gunters, and living with him is Elizabeth R. - perhaps his wife if he indeed married in 1853, but no children are listed. I would appreciate any information concerning: WILLIAM H. JONES, ELIZABETH JONES, ELIZA JONES, and SOLOMON AND EMILY JONES PATRICK. Will be happy to exchange information.
