    3. Not only will you be in somebody's database, you will have no control over how your DNA is used. And probably you won't have any guarantee of privacy. For example, there's probably nothing that would stop the folks in the project doing research on the connection between DNA and diseases like cancer. Or the link between DNA and alcoholism. Nothing like reading in the newspaper that your family has had a predisposition to alcoholism going back 400 years. 3. Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] Molecular Genealogy Could it be that we are all making too much of this dna recording project??? Without getting into Mars, Scientific Objectivism, distrust of technology, or digging up corpses on a dark and stormy night, I think that a tablespoon of blood, read and recorded with the present technology, might not be such a stupid or scary thing. Heck, I have given blood on a regular basis, to strangers, most of my life, and really can't be all that sure what they did with it, so another table spoon given won't worry me alot. I don't fear that someone will leave my blood at a crime scene or that some present Dr. Leakey clone is going to try and tie my ancestry into Africa. The simplest way to view this is that someone will make a record of your dna for a database that might possibly aid some descendant in connecting to you in the future. If that scares some or makes one angry then it definitely is not for them. I am sure that the project will go on either way and the ones involved will feel they have done what they could to help their kin who come after in some small way. I am happy to hear that there is interest in this area concerning the study. I was hoping that there would be a discussion online about this study.....could we hear from you online here on the ALCOFFEE mailing list concerning your thoughts about this study? 3. The paving over of graves.... no matter HOW OLD sounds like it ought to be against the law. .. or pure hokum (like virus "alerts"). What comes to mind is graves when Dale Hollow Dam was created... quite a few cemetaries were moved (& yes, those buried in the back yard 200 yrs ago probably are still there).... I dunno.... something don't sound right. Louisiana has had a space problem for DECADES (possibly centuries since they couldn't go underground to begin with). my 2-cents

    3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------595A39882C57 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dear List: I was so mortified by this that I am sending it for all to see. These could be our ancestors, God forbid, and we would want the world to know what is happening. How much longer are graves going to be descrated across America before the Powers that Be put a stop to it. There surely were people involved with the "pouring of cement for a parking lot" that could have stopped this before it went any further. Do we have any hope that the day will come when a person who has the power to say "NO" will do so? What right does anyone, regardless of who they may be, how much money they may have, who they may know, where they may come from, where they live, or what laws may prevail at the time or place, have to desecrate graves which are holy ground no matter where they lay? ALL graves should be respected and protected. Can you just imagine cement being poured over the graves in Arlington, what a horrible thought. Or maybe someone wants to put a parking lot over Grant's tomb or Robert E. Lee or Colin P. Kelley, or Abraham Lincoln, could they? No, of course not, but as much as we revere and respect those blessed people, do our families deserve any less protection from intruders and money grabbers, absolutely not. Think about this. Suppose a few years pass before you can go to another state to pay your respects to your ancestors, which happens with so many of us, and you arrive only to find a parking lot staring you in the face, or a convenience store, shopping mall, etc....or maybe someone just decided they liked the spot and wanted to build a home there.......IT HAS HAPPENED, the question now is when will it stop. The St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, Louisiana, who own the cemetery, are acquiring the old ancestral plots to resell them, we assume for lack of space, and for past unpaid fees. The church has already paved over the original cemetery which housed the Original Acadian Ancestors that Immigrated here from Acadia! It is now a Parking Lot! We, as Guardians of our Ancestors Tombs and Genealogist, Historians, hope to put an end to this destruction. The remains, history and genealogy of these tombs desperately need to be need to be preserved for future generations to come. By sending this letter we hope to get your support in this effort. We need to join together to save our Acadian History. This effort is being named "Rest In Peace": St. Martinville Project Save. We hope to gather all the support from the Community, Descendants World Wide, All Societies: Historical, Military, Genealogical, Family Organizations and anyone with an interest in saving these old Tombs/Graves from desecration! We with "Rest In Peace" would appreciate your input and or backing in this effort. Spear heading our group are: Annette Eschete, Youngsville, LA Andre Courville, Breaux Bridge, LA And many other new volunteers world wide. If you are interested in lending moral support and agree with our premise, please contact us immediately as time is of the essence. This has been going on for at lease 5 years already. We will be setting up a web-site for all to sign a "Letter of Protest" of this destruction and "Eviction" of the deceased remains in this cemetery. Please Join us in helping to stop this blatant destruction of our past. Our Ancestors where evicted from Acadia in 1755 and found a loving home in Louisiana. Now their remains are being evicted! Will this ever stop! Please note*: That some of these graves that are tagged to be aquired and sold are marked with Civil War Placques and Veterans Placques. Any help you can lend will be appreciated by one and all in our group. If you have any ideas, contacts or groups interested in joining us please let us know as soon as possible. If you could post this letter at any of your meetings, or send to your members we would be grateful for your help. 2. Jack Butler
    3. There are probably some specific questions that DNA testing could answer - like the Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings thing. In my wife's genealogy, there are Wetmores and Whitmores who lived in the same are in the early 1600s and the descendants are talking about a few of them getting tested just to answer the age old question of whether they are tryly related. But the idea that a general collection of DNA data will help with genealogy is highly questionable and if someone was attempting to sell the idea of contributing DNA on that basis, it would make me very suspect about their motives.

    2. I read Annie Adler's directions to the site of the Creech Reunion next Saturday. I am originally from the Samson area and I would give different directions to the Travelers Rest Church building. Head west out of Samson toward Opp on Main Street (also highway 52). As you are about to come to the end of the four lane divided Main Street, begin to look for a road to the right and take it. This is county road 17, which runs north, northwest from its point of beginning. Travelers Rest is about a mile away. Elbert J. 3. (Sorry Phylis. Realized I sent this to your address instead of the board.) Phyllis. I have to say, at this point, I don't care for this idea. I'm very suspicious of a program that tells me that this will help me in locating family BUT that this information will not be given to me. I don't see that, for the present, it will help us find help with our ancestors since they would have to be dug up to compare the DNA and if I know where they are to begin with, that is useless. For the future, it appears to me that there are so many records kept on people now that there will be no hiding place for anyone. I can see it being a benefit to the service for identifying our MIA's or even to the law to confirm that a body might be a peticular person. For those who wish to do this, I have no problem with them doing it. I just think potential is there to be misused, too easily. Thanks for opening it up for discussion. annie

    2. Peg & Dave Leslie
    3. I couldn't find reference to the web site pushing DNA testing for genealogy so I don't know how they expect to match living people who are generations apart. If you are an adpoted peron into genealogy to find a natural parent, I could see a benefit. That's it! Otherwise, are you going to start digging up graves? Several generations back, would have so many outside influences, you could only accomplish anything by digging up each generation on the family tree. I find this repulsive. it is even more difficult since my family past grandparents in Alabama seem to be in graves whose markers have gone. I agree that we can find things far more valuable to do with the money than to make the technology generally available, much less the digging up process. I'm really interested in finding my heritage, but this is just an excess that isn't important enough to use the resources, has the potential to invade our privacy, and invade the dignity of our ancestors. It may be important to some to try to save people who have gone to their reward long ago by baptizing them into a new religion but I don't want any of my ancestors messed with even if they are also yours. They have their right to keep what they believed with no one else trying to change them retroactively. Right or wrong, I like to make my decisions and I think my people have a right to theirs whether we agree or not. Peg

    3. Apparently I missed the beginning of the topic, but understand the general gist to be: contribute some cells now & they can do something bordering on miraculous later ... & possibly find out who's related to who. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Everyone knows they're already doing something for the living as far as paternity suits go. But untill they get the bugs worked out & go back to scientific objectivism, they can go hang. SUPPOSEDLY.... they've already taken gene samples from a wide cross section of culturally & ethnicly diverse individuals.... tossed em all together, shaken liberally, & somehow arrived at the conclusion that EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE came from one single woman ... lemme guess.... in Africa/pan Asia?? Hogwash. That makes about as much sense as seeing websites where someone has supposedly traced their ancestors back to John the Baptist. They've just barely mapped all the gazillion bits that compose DNA, let alone come up with a computer that determines the SOURCE. And if just ONE jot turns out to be a tiddle, your so-called african ancestor ends up being a tree sloth. If they've got so much energy & computing power why not do something SIMPLE like get ALL the census data in an electronic format the average middle-aged person can read without guessing if it says Cowan or Gowan. Folks can barely get an erector set to work in orbit around Earth, but we're going to Mars? And then cough up 20 MILLION for a joy ride? gimme a break All of us will have been dust for centuries before they find the cure for everything & aliens come to rescue man from himself. that MY 2-cents worth. Scoot
