There are lots and lots of Halls. Could you add a name and time frame for any Halls in the family you know of? That would help people to give you what you need. I am distressingly short in my Hall info. I only have the one family (and info from other about descendents). I'd love to get more info going back. Some places show that my John Hall was born in GA but his wife's pension application shows that he was born in 1815 in Clark(e), Jackson County, Missippy. I checked with the maps area at the University here and the only Clarke they could find for that time period was Clarke Store which was actually an area not a town. It was sort of a penisula in the swamps. Other people who him born earlier. In fact, the 1850 census shows a John Hall living with Elizabeth age 55. I think that was a miss reading of age 35. I haven't a copy of the original census. There was no state of birth listed. I have a feeling that his family moved back to Alabama before 1835 or 6 when he enlisted in the Creek or Seminole Indian wars. The time frame is the same as your John Hall Dyess. They may have been cousins or something but I really have no information I can support except that single John Hall back that far. If you find a connection, I'd love to find out. She was married to Wiley Berry Lassiter in 1854. He was killed during the civil war. Wiley Berry Lassiter was born 18 Aug 1832, in Alabama. On 6 Nov 1854 he married Marthemia Donaldson, known as Tamer, at Elba, Coffee, Alabama. Tamer was a daughter of David Donaldson, Jr. and Priscilla Davis and a sister to Jemina who married Wiley's brother Ephraim. Wiley worked as a wood chopper before joining the Confederate Army. He enlisted 12 March 1862 at Camp Walton, (Now known as Fort Walton Beach). Enlisting with Berry were his brother Ephraim, two of his sisters husbands, and possibly two younger brothers. Berry was a Corporal in Company "E", lst Florida Infantry. He was captured 22 July 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia and imprisoned at Camp Chase at Columbus, Ohio. He died 6 Jan 1865 of Variola (Small-pox). The good folks in Columbus were angry to have a Confederate Cemetery within their city and set about moving it six miles out of town. There is a book about this prison in the Ohio State Library relating glowing terms of "The best food many of those poor southern boys ever ate." And how well they were treated. Jack Burns, an elderly kin of Dick's told me that his ancestor was a guard at Camp Chase and it was a deplorable institution. He remembered tales he heard as a boy about prison life. He was told the prisoners had 1/2 cup of rice a day and one cup of water. They were not medicated properly, were given one thin, ragged blanket in the harshest of winters and slept on the ground. Many froze to death, most starved to death. It appears the book on Camp Chase is mostly fiction. There are no names to make the graves only numbers. Berry is number 712. after the war a lady from Georgia went in search of her husband's grave. She found the cemetery in a terrible state of disrepair. Until her death she used her own money to keep the cemetery free of weeds, planted flowers, and made sure each grave had a number even if there were no names. None of Berry's family had ever been to his grave site so far as I know. I was there in 1988, but did not get to visit the grave and I do regret it. Tamer had a daughter when she married Berry or, at least she had a Donaldson ++child she Brought to the marriage. Married to Marthema Tamer Donaldson (6 Nov. 1854) He may have died as a prison of war More About WILEY BERRY LASSITER: Burial: ,Camp Chase, Ohio Gene (Lassiter) Kelley http://www.geocities.com/gene_pc/index.html Researching: Lassiter, Majors, Carnley, Prescott ----- Original Message ----- From: <JWi4194718@aol.com> To: <ALCOFFEE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2001 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [ALCOFFEE] Grimes from Coffee Co., Al in Walton Co., Fl.
