In Memory of Mother Enterprise Ledger Thursday, October 28, 2004 Geraldine Deshazo Croley Mrs. Geraldine Deshazo Croley, 92, of Enterprise, Alabama died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in Medical Center Enterprise. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Dr. Ted Satterfield officiating. Burial will follow with Searcy Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at Searcy Funeral Home. Mrs. Croley was a devoted Christian and was a long-time member of First Assembly of God Church, Enterprise. She was a well-know seamstress. I was alone with her (Tuesday Oct. 26, 2004 10:44pm) at the last and was able to pray and ask God to bless and take care of her. She then took her last breath as I told her how wonderful she was as a Mother. She opened her eyes and looked at me as she let go. Then she closed her eyes as in peace. It is my belief that she was saying "let me go to my rest, I am tired and ready to meet my Sweet Jesus"...... Her leaving will be devastating to the hearts of us who loved her and was left behind and a joy to the ONE WHO WILL RECEIVE HER. She was preceded in death by her Husband, William Lee Croley, two daughters and three sons, Willie Dean Croley of Enterprise; Elmer Jean Batchelor of Niceville, Fla.; Kathy Loy of Houston, Texas; James Bernard (Jimmy) Croley of Pensacola, Fla.; and Don Croley of Enterprise. Survivors include a loving family consisting of two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and James Overby of League City, Texas; Yvonne and Kenneth Grantham of Ozark; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Mother is at peace and with her sweet Jesus. I will miss her daily and forever with much love. pat. Sarah was born June 1843 at four o'clock in the morning in Barbour Co., AL to Daniel Stone Hood (born 1812) and Eliza Jane Jernigan (b. 1817). The 1850 Dale County Census shows Daniel Stone Hood and Eliza Jane with Children: Mary Jane, Eliza Jane, Charlottte Jane, John C. and Agustavis. The 1860 census show two more children; Tolbert and Martha Jane. By 1870, there is one more son, A.E. Hood. Daniel and Eliza have died and John C. is the head of household. A.E. is eight years old. John C. served in the confederate war and returned home to marry Mary Sellers. Daniel, a school teacher, educated his sons. The times and living were hard, but they had each other. The south was recovering from the war years. Many young men had died in the war. Sarah Jane was thrty years old when she married her cousin, John Taylor Hood (b. 1847). He was the son of Joshua T. Hood and Elizabeth Cole. Daniel Stone and Joshua T. were brothers. They were shool teachers and surveyors. Daniel lived past 1866 and Joshua died before 1880. John and Sarah moved into Coffee County about 1885. They were farmers. That have many descendants living in the Coffee Co., area today. One of the their sons, Jessie Taylor Hood, b. 1876, married Polly Edgar in 1932 in Coffee County. She sleeps in the Old Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery. Her grave marked has long disappeared. Close by are the graves of her son, Jessie T. Hood and his wife Polly Edgar. The cemetery is located near New Brockton, northeast of Enterprise. Sarah's brother, Arthur Elsy Hood, lived in Enterprise in 1910 with his wife and children. A.E. (1861-1921) was my g,grandfather. His daughter Mamie Lee Hood (1897-1978), was my grandmother. I am the daughter of Mamie's child, Beatrice Louise Findley Moates. Submitted by: Annette Sasser, 2908 Orange Hill Rd., Chipley, FL 32428 and Written by: Bea Moates. I have tried to link my Hughes to other Hughes's in the surrounding counties but haven't connected yet. I do believe Ransom Hughes was maried to Elizabeth Fillingim. I don't have any proof other than a story that was printed in the Historical Book of Coffee County that I actually found in the Library in Alexander City, AL. where I live. It was written by Ransoms great granddaughter, Jewell Rachels Wesley. I have found census records of the Fillingim family in Coffee County. I also found someone else who had researched the Fillingim family back to wales. They didn't have her name listed, but she did fit in as one of the children they had a birth date and no name for. If anyone needs info on the Fillingim family contact me and I will send info. As for the Hughes family, I have followed the Fillingim's in census records to hopfully find the Hughes's living close by. no luck yet. I do believe the Hughes's that were living close by could be brothers of Ransom. Not giving up! Again, Thanks for your replies. Shelia

The 1850 Census of Coffee County has the surname clearly spelled HUGHS, not HUGHES. I can suggest you check on Indian War Records and/or Pension files. Thank you for your reply. I have searched Dale Co. and surrounding Counties for Ransom Hughes. Have had no luck. the 1840 census doesn't list children's names which makes it difficult to determine who their parents were. Especially with records being destroyed (marriage, birth, ect.). I haven't been able to link Ransom to any of the people listed in the Dale County census yet. Even though I do believe there could be a elation between them. I believe this family came to Coffee County in the early 1840's. But from where I am not sure. Thanks again for your reply.
