Instead of gifts, flowers were brought, and all went in a group to the cemetery and placed them on the graves of mother and father, and attended church. After the service, a picnic lunch was spread under the trees in the yard. Pictures were taken of the table and the family. All could feel the presence and blessing of the loved ones we honored. Each brought a sterling character; thrift, determination and a will to work. Wealthy was the more serious minded of the two. Davis had red hair and Irish wit. They rented land a few years then entered a tract and built a log smoke house in which they lived one year, cooking on a furnace built under the shelter extension in front of the smoke house. After making the first crop, a large log bedroom was built. Within the next few years, more was added to the house from time to time, until there were two large bedrooms and a porch on each side. This was called "the big house." The kitchen was a large log room a few years behind the "big house." By the year 1880, Davis and Wealthy had six sons and two daughters living. Although two of the sons had married and established homes of their own, the old house was getting a little crowded. So the father and sons began to build a new house two or three hundred yards over the hill from the old one. Trees were cut and hauled to and from the saw mill in wagons. Lumber for floors, ceilings, and joints were dressed with a hard plane. Rocks for chimneys and pilars were hauled. Nearly all of this work and the actual building was done by the father and his sons themselves, between crops and other work. At least five years went by during the preparation and building. January 18, 1885 was mid- winter, but a glad day for Humphrey Davis Landers, Wealthy and their four sons and two daughters, for that was the day they moved into their new home. Only one son, Tyree Isud Landers of Bowdon, Ga. and one daughter Eliza Landers Ayers of Route 1, Wedowee, of this large family, are living today. But there are many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mrs. Jerusha Landers Braden, granddaughter of Humphrey Davis Landers, daughter of Humphrey Davis Landers II and sister of Humphrey Davis Landers III now lives in this Landers ancestral home. It was here that the Landers descendants and friends met on Sunday, August 3, 1941 for their annual reunion. The morning was spent exchanging greetings and in a general get together. At noon a picnic lunch was spread under a long table near the century old oaks which shade the spacious grounds. Those present were: Mrs. J.R. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE CLEBURNE NEWS", Heflin, Cleburne County, Alabama for MAY 1941 NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, MAY 1, 1941 IN MEMORY OF ERNEST CHANDLER In memory of our dear husband and brother-in-law. On Friday afternoon, February 7, 1941, about 5 o'clock, the death angel removed from our midst, dear Ernest, while visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Robinson of Waco, Ga. Ernest was born July 10, 1908 making him 32 years of age. We can't understand why God took him away so young. Ernest was a kind and affectionate husband; he had never confessed Christ, but he had a hope. Now he has paid a debt we all have got to pay sooner or later whether we are prepared or unprepared. Ernest's death was a great shock to all. He wasn't sick any more than usual. Now wife and sisters, cheer up for dear Ernest. We wouldn't call him back in this troublesome world but strive to live a christian life and meet him in heaven where there is no more sorrow or death, where God will wipe all tears away and heal all broken hearts. We don't look on Ernest as dead, only sleeping till the resurrection morm, when we all shall be called up to meet Jesus in the clouds where there will be no more parting or said goodbyes, all will be gladness, peace and rest. They have placed him in his casket and borne him far away still in death, but only sleeping. Ernest was loved by all who knew him. Dear Ernest, we miss you and no one can fill the vacancy in our hearts. A precious one from us is gone, a voice we loved is still, a place is vacant in our home which never can be filled. Oh, how sad it makes us feel to hear little Earnesteen calling her Daddy, always looking for him to come home. No one knows how sad and lonely we are without him. J. Lebus Casey, Judge of Probate --------- IN MEMORY OF MRS. LENA MERRILL In the passing of Mrs. Lena Merrill, widow of the late Mr. T.C. Merrill, Cleburne county loses one of it's noble mothers. Ill health, followed by complete invalidism, made her a shut-in, but such apparent defeatism in no way crushed her spirit. Always when in the community, the writer would callf or a visit with her and at such times found her interesting and interested. Interesting in as much as she lay on her bed, her body often taut from pain, but her spirit attuned and in communion with Him whom she trusted and on whom she relied. Hers was an overcoming nature, not by sheer will, certainly not, but by the grace of God. One could not look upon her benign face, see the peace rardiating from her love lighted eyes, hear the intenations of her ever gentle voice, without a realization of her communion with Him who was her guide. These qualities reflected the power of her faith. She did not complain, nor did she foster in her soul any bitterness, resentment against a fate that left her heavily burdened as a widow with a family of children to educate. She met life with courage day by day, prayerfully she sought to do what she could for the development of her children. Above all, she chose that better part of trying to instill deeply into their consciousness the basic worth of every great soul-correct principle. Recently in business dealings with one of her sons, I was told "his word is as good as law". What a tribute to that man, but a greater one to his beloved mother. Times change and with it the mode of living, crossing perceptibly on motherhood. There are new problems, new responsibilities, only the future will reveal the results of the contrasting difference. The old fashioned mothers, of which Mrs. Merrill was one, were the force and inspiration of our present day generation. Civilization in these times may profitably look back on the teachings of those who have gone before. A beautiful life has ended here and has been called higher, but the gentleness of her gracious spirit will linger with all who knew and loved her. Written by Harriet Perryman. --------- DEATHS MRS. Bucker of Leeds. ------- IN MEMORY OF LAURA MYRTLE GREEN The news of the death of Laura Myrtle Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Green, on last wednesday morning of last week, made very home in Heflin a house of sorrow. Along her father's mail route, men and women wept for the loss of a child they knew and loved, for she was adored and loved. Hers was a familiar little figure in the schools, on the streets and in the market places. She would ride her wheel like she was sailing, then again her efforts would appear laborious. Her beautiful hair, silken and shining could be seen in the distance and we would know Laura Myrtle was approaching. She would wave her little hand and smile on all she met. Hers was a joyous, appealing personality. She had that little spirit of tease and loved to apply it. Her mind was keen and brilliant, in fact it was sparkling! She loved her music, gloried in her tapping lessons, but her books were of first concern and she was always an A pupil, though she was modest about any honors. To her music teacher she brought every grade card, knowing the full approval with which it would be met but never did make any comment when presenting it. Her affections when once bestowed took deep roots exalting those whom she called friend. She was chummy with Chief Robinson and tears were uncontrolled when he learned of her death. Living next door to Dr. Wood, she hailed him as "Doc". Rev. Roy Niager was her pal and she displayed with childhood pride her vaccination scar because Dr. Connell had made it, but always Dr. Wright was her "medicine man" and her beloved standby. The writer enjoyed observing the closeness and companionship between Laura and her teacher Miss Peterson; often they could be seen walking together in close conversation. A few years was no barrier to Laura Myrtle. For her age, she was a positive character; at times was really womanly but her charm was in her childish simplicity of manner. There was in her an innate goodness that radiated from her lovely little face. Thoughtful and companionable with her mother and Barbara Lee, there was that possessive feeling for "Daddy" and she would often slip early into the kitchen to be sure that he was getting breakfast on time. There existed an affinity of love between her and Grandma, Mrs. Anne Green; this devotion was encouraged by her mother for she knew it was a beautiful benediction in her little life. The disparity of years was nothing to Laura Myrtle and trips and long visits were planned to the childhood home of her father. At the last, friends and school mates all brought flowers in profusion and she rested in their beauty and fragrance, for she was the fairest flower of all. It was so tragic that the little body so fragile and delicate, yet so energetic, had to go back to earth in such clouds and shadows. All day we longed for the sunshine to come out and linger on the last scene, for she was the symbol of sunshine, but this was not to be. We sought to be grateful for the nine beautiful years God had given us of this child's life and in the face of nature's gloom, we found comfort in the thought that her precious spirit was resting with God who have it. Written by Ella Perryman ------- CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the many friends of Laura Myrtle and the family for their expressions of sympathy at her death. Our sincerest thanks for the floral offerings, kind words from the ministers and unending services from Brown - Service. May God bless each and everyone. Stewart, who in turn had taken it from her husband and snapped it once on an empty cartridge, Mrs. Minnie Wager, city clerk of Heflin, fired one shot at her husband's assailant Thursday of last week, in a tense, midnight drama. Mrs. Wager's father, who was also present, fired two shots at Stewart a few minutes before Chief of Police Rhodes Robinson and Sheriff W. Prestridge arrived on the scene. The back seat of Stewart's car, which had been driven into the Wager's side yard near the saw mill, was piled deep with 80 one-gallon cans of moonshine liquor, Chief Robinson said. Chief Robinson said he and Sheriff Prestridge had been "tipped" that a car of liquor would come over from the Georgia side of the state line. Chief Robinson stated they passed the car above Heflin a few miles but did not recognize it, because they had reports that the car was suppose to have about 400 gallons in it and they were looking for a heavy loaded car. Chief Robinson was at a local restaurant when a call was made over the police call system that a shooting had taken place at the Wager's home. The driver of the car drove into the road leading into the mill yard and backed into the road beside the log skids. Mrs. Wager stated she didn't pay much attention until she heard hammering as if someone was beating on the saw at the mill. On going to the window she could not see anyone until one of the men began striking matches about the engine which pulls the mill and stated the sound of hammering came from within the planer mill. After watching for about 20 minutes, Mrs. Wager awoke her husband; they watched and listened about five minutes before going to the mill to investigate. Upon their appearance, two men came from the mill, Stewart shutting the car door in his companions' face. Mr. Wager walked up taking ahold of the steering wheel, asking Stewart what they were doing in the mill house. It was told to this newspaper that at this time, Stewart grabbed Wager, dragging him into the car, taking Wager's gun from him and snapping it once at his side, at which moment Mrs. Wager was struggling to get the gun from Stewart. Finally wrenching the gun from Stewart while he was choking Mr. Wager, she hit him in the head, not fazing Stewart at all, she stated. Stewart was trying to drive away with Mr. Wager, who was by that time choked unconscious. Mrs. Wager struggled to get into the car and turning the steering wheel; it was then the only words the man ever spoke, in telling Mrs. Wager "to get the hell out." About this time, according to our information, A.J. Adams had arrived on the scene. In seeing Mr. Adams, Stewart began to choke and bend Mr. Wager's head over the back of the front seat. Mr. Adams told the man twice to quit and let Mr. Wager out of the car. Not heeding Mr. Adams' warning, Mr. Adams shot twice and as he fired, Mrs. Wager shot once, it is understood. At the time when Mr. Wager was in the car being choked, the second man, whose name is not known to this newspaper had crawled under the log skids and disappeared. Stewart was employed at a shipping clerk at a manufacturing plant in Gadsden. The automobile and the whiskey were confiscated. ----------- SERVICES CONDUCTED FOR SAMUEL LORREN Piedmont, Ala. He was married to Miss Mae Halcomb on Dec. 20, 1936. It was with a deep feeling of sorrow that we laid the mortal remains of our dear friend and neighbor in the last resting place at Cedar Creek cemetery. Fitting indeed were the beautiful flowers that were placed upon his grave, as the flowers will so quickly fade, as in his life, cut off in the bloom of an active ambitious manhood. He was so quiet and good and was such a shining star in his home. He always stopped on his way home to let his mother know when he got in from his work. He knew the uneasiness and anxiety of his dear mother and always showed his love for her, by remembering her in many ways that will never be forgotten. He was a devoted husband and a loving son, true to every trust. He has gone from the trials of this life to the crowning glories of eternity, but his memory will long live in the hearts of his friends and relatives. Those who mourn his departure are his widow Mrs. Mae Story; his parents Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Story; two brothers, Carl and Glen and two sisters, Miss Ruth Story and Mrs. Gladys McKnight and a host of friends. Fire of unknown origin gutted the Randolph county courthouse on Saturday about dawn, destroying the entire upper floors and exhasting the city's water supply before the blaze was finally brought under control. According to Probate Judge H.M. Brittain, the fire was discovered about 4 a.m. by the jailer, who aroused citizens of the town by firing guns and sounding automobile horns up and down the streets. The blaze had already made considerable headway before it was discovered and flames were belching out of the upper story windows and though the roof by the time the city's volunteer Fire Deparment could reach the scene. Efforts to distinguish the blaze were hampered by the city's low water supply. Additional water was provided by emergency pumps placed in the creek running behind the jail. The fire was still burning at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, making it impossible for officials to enter the building to investigate the cause of the fire. This is the second time the Randolph county courthouse has burned. A fire razed the courthouse in 1896, completely destroying the building and all county records. The present building was erected the following year. ----------
NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE CLEBURNE NEWS", Heflin, Cleburne County, Alabama for JULY 1940 NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, JULY 4, 1940 AI News July 1 Mrs. Gilbert Gay of near Hopewell is visiting her daughter Mrs. Loyd Garner this week. ----- DEATHS EDWARD P. McMAHAN Edward P. McMahan, a former citizen of Cleburne county, died in a hospital at Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday night, June 21 and was buried in Hattiesburg on Sunday afternoon, June 23. Ed, as he was known to his many friends both here and in Cleburne county, had been on the decline physically for some time. He was 69 years old on June 14, 1940 and until two of three years ago, had enjoyed good health. His former friends in Cleburne county will not be surprised to know that since coming to Mississippi he had made many friends which was made manifest by the large concourse of friends which attended the funeral services. Also by the beautiful floral offering. He is survived by the following children: W.A. and Homer McMahan Mrs. V.M. Hamilton Mrs. J.E. Perkins Mrs. Lon Hogan; all of Hattiesburg, Miss. Mrs. G.D. Thomas of Alma, Ga. Mrs. Buren Morgan of Biloxi, Miss. His only surviving brother, W.C. McMahan, formerly of Heflin, was not able to attend the funeral. He is also survived by a large number of nephews and nieces. When I head that Ed had passed away, my mind naturally reverted to the long ago and I thought of Bill McMahan and the nine stalwart sons of his, who grew to manhood and established homes of their own; and of the changes which have taken place since those happy days of long ago. As I listened to the ministers who conducted the funeral services, many thoughts, which space forbids mentioning here, came to my mind. Although it was a sad occasion for a last meeting, I had wished that I might get to see my friend, Wiley McMahan once more, but fate decreed that wish could not be granted at this time. It was a sincere pleasure to meet and shake hands with and look into the faces the sons and sons-in-law of the late George McMahan. Sunday afternoon as the sun was far into the west, as I looked at the casket as it was lowered into the grave, with a sad and heavy heart, I said goodbye to a friend of my better days. W.H.L. APPIE GREEN On January 4, 1940, God sent an angel to earth and took from our home our most precious gift, our wife and mother. It was so hard to give her up that day, but God does all things best. When he sent for mother, she closed her eyes and left a place that no other can fill. I know heaven is brighter with mother to help sing around the great white throne. She often said she was prepared to go any tme that God sent for her. Mother suffered alot while here on earth, but she has gone where there will be no pain or sorrows. She worked for her place in Heaven 49 years and it seemed such a short time to us who loved her. If we could have kept mother, all our troubles would seem easier to bear. Our home will never be home to any of us again because when we came in there would be mother. The world seems empty to us without her, but she has gone on to wait in a better place than this. We can't bring mother back, but I know that she has gone where all can meet again, if we live the life that she did. Ones who Loved Her. ------ IN MEMORY OF MRS. W.L. By his going, there has been made a vacant place in his home and community which one one else can fill. It seemed more than we could bear to give him up, but we are not to question God's work, for He doeth all things well. To the heart broken relatives, I say, cheer up, for he is not dead, but only sleeping. His troubles and trials are over and he is now at rest with God. How he suffered here no one knows, but he was always patient and bore his pains without a mumuer, until God, the Great Physician, saw fit to call him home. We should not wish him to be back in this old world where he suffered so much. We know that he cannot come back to us, but by trusting in God, we can meet him in that land where there will be no parting. To know him meant to love him. He always had a kind word for everyone, and was always ready to help those who needed him. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, a son F.C. of Anniston; two daughters, Mrs. H.M. May of Blue Mountain and Mrs. F.E. Hall of Heflin; three brothers, J.M. of Lithonia, Ga., L.G. of Social Circle, Ga. and W.O. of Crawford, Ga., 13 grandchildren and one great grandson.
