I believe there is a survey of the Ranburne Cemetery in the Alabama Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Library. Two members of my UDC Chapter were helping to research and compile a survey several months ago and I think they placed a copy in the Anniston Library. They also might have placed a copy in the Lucille Morgan Library in Heflin. Lynda Lowery
Thanks, Larry. I'm sure there are other family members I have missed there. It would be great to have the whole thing. Shoot! If I were you, I'd type the thing up, bind it, and sell it! LOL (Unless somebody else did the transcribing. They they should do it.) The genealogy columns have been discontinued and I have been taking a break, doing my own genealogy instead of everybody else's. Just a spot here and a spot there. A lot less pressure this way. But I sure learned a lot about a bunch of families! Thanks for responding. Will eagerly await your finding the survey. Many thanks, Judy
Judy, you and I have talked before and I kept up with your genealogy features in the Fayette Co., GA paper. I will let you know when I locate the survey. Wayne, I have researched your family. I live in Woodland. The first person buried in the Gold Ridge cemetery was Jeppie Gibbs Morgan. Her husband, J. V. "Tiny" Morgan was the brother of my wife's grandfather, William "Will" Morgan. T.J. Morgan who is Will's son is related to Jeppie's husband and is my wife's uncle and is the present Pastor at Gold Ridge. Major Gibbs married Emma Batchelor. My wife's GM was a Batchelor. Regarding the Ranburne, aka Lost Creek, Cemetery Survey it is typed and about 28 pages in length. I have two unpublished surveys of which this is one and have tried to keep them where I can find them but after a cleaning for Christmas guests it was misplaced. I will look in the building where I put all my boxes of "stuff" and try to locate it. Janie, I have a copy of a survey of the Ranburne Baptist Church somewhere in my files. It has not been published but has been making its rounds between researchers. I have no idea in which file box it's in and I have many so I will have to search for it. I kept your list of names and will look for them when I find the survey. Wayne, this is Ron Fordham. Do you know anyone in the Gibbs family that lived near Rapid City South Dakota sometime around 1973-74? I met them when I lived there doing a summer student Job while attending Auburn. Made friends, then lost contact. It was pretty amazing to see an "18" Cleburne County tag in the Church parking lot when we got there one Sunday. -------r-o-n--------- Still in Auburn Wayne wrote: > I am not that familiar with the Treadwell's other than I went to school with > a boy name Timmy when I was in school at Ranburne. Ok. I will. I think they will be in the Ranburne Cemetery. It is rather large. Probably guessing approximately 1500 graves at least. Hi Wayne, Thanks so much for your offer of help. I'm looking for any information on the descendants of Mamie L Hanson and Clarence B. Treadwell. My great-great-grandfather McIntosh's sister married a Treadwell. One of their sons, Zadock D. Treadwell, moved from Carroll County, GA to Cleburne Co., AL, then on to Texas. One of Zadock Treadwell's son married Mamie L. Hanson in Cleburne County and they had the following children: - William Zedd Treadwell, married Otie Mae Smith. - Flora Bell Treadwell, married William A. Walker - Cecil Grace Treadwell, may have married Rex Newton Thomas - Fred Treadwell, married Elsie - Eunice Sybil Treadwell, married Justin Darrell Roegner - Polly O. Treadwell - Mary H. Treadwell Mamie is listed as widowed in the 1930 census. I looked on line and the Ranburne Baptist Church doesn't appear to have been transcripted yet. On www.findagrave.com, there are only 47 listings. Any help you could give me would be great. And I know about those "memory problems". I'm 59 and I have the same problem. I was born and raised in a little town that is called Ranburne, AL. It has been know by many in its earlier days as Lost Creek. There are still living in the community Hanson's and Treadwell's. My great-great uncle had a son name Sam Gibbs who married a Donnie Hanson. In earlier days there was a Hanson Store I vaguely remember it. I am 63 so some of it is not fresh on my mind. There is a Cleburne Co Heritage Book that can be purchased but I don't know where to get one at the moment. There is online and I do not know the web address off hand where there are several cemeteries listed with all the graves listed. You can try just typing in Ranburne Baptist Church Cemetery and it might pull it up. I can't remember if it was in usgenweb or rootsweb. I will try to help you find the info you need. It would be my guess that they would be buried there possibly. Also between Ranburne, AL and Bowdon, Ga, a distance of about 6 miles some folks call that area Lost Creek also. I know some of the history of the area and like I said I will try to help if you will tell me what you need. Looking for your response. You can find the Heritage Books for all counties at the downtown Birmingham Library on the first floor of the old building next to the courthouse, The library in Trussville Alabama also has most of the county heritage books. > From: alclebur-request@rootsweb.com > Subject: ALCLEBUR Digest, Vol 4, Issue 2 > To: alclebur@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 17 Oct 2009 01:01:08 -0600 > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I have a Cleburne County Heritage Book and have looked at entries for the surnames of Moore and Hurst, but I don't see the information you request. If you live in this area of Alabama, these books are available at the Lucille Morgan Library in Heflin and at the Alabama Room of the Anniston-Calhoun County Library. Several years ago I posted an inquiry attempting to identify the old wooden school building on the NE corner of Hollis Crossroads. I received several informative responses. Based on those responses, and conversations with my dad and older family members, I am forwarding the following speculation about the old Pleasant Grove school. In what I am advised is a page from the Cleburne County, Alabama Heritage Book, someone wrote, "The earliest documentation found for this school was in 1918." The author also states, "The old school site stood in the NW corner of the intersection of Highways 431 and 9. The new school would be on the hill of the NE corner of the said intersection, directly behind the "Rock Store (Howle & Turner #2)." I apparently lost the scanned images from which this information was transcribed, but I recall the author mentioning that the so-called new school was formed by consolidating several of the community schools from the surrounding communities. As best I can ascertain, the original wooden school building was moved at some point. Some years ago as my dad, mom and brother drove north on 431, dad turned as they drove north through Hollis Crossroads and pointed back over his left shoulder and said "I went to school right up yonder on that hill." Then, in later years I personally remember him telling me that the building that presently sits on the NE corner of Hollis Crossroads is where he went to school. Not being privy to my brother's earlier experience, I presumed he meant the building's physical location, as opposed to the building. The old wooden school building must have originally sat across the street (on the NW corner) from its present location and was moved to its present location at some point after the newer school facilities burned. That would be consistent with my brother's memory of dad's comments and would further reconcile his memory with what my dad told me. Does anyone know precisely when the old wooden school building was moved to its present location?
