Books suggest it has something to do with Holly, but a more likely explanation is that between macclesfield and Bosley the is a spur of the Pennines and the promontory is called Hollins. Hollinshead appears to have originated from a man named Hugh Hollyns of Head. So the two families are probably linked. Stephen
