    3. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi: May I supplement the excellent response provided by jfilyaw2009 earlier. I am sorry that I have deleted the originals query and cannot respond directly to the person making the query. 1. The General Highway of Clay County Al does show Hassel's Gap in the township, range and section indicated by the responder. It is located about 2 miles north of Ashland on county road 31. The map indicates an adjacent cemetery. 2. The University of Alabama Arts and Sciences "Historical Atlas of Alabama" in its volume II for "Cemeteries by County" indicates the following relative to this issue: a. Cemetery: Hassel Gap b. Locale: 46-NE (this is important only as it applies to the enclosed map) c. Location: T20S, R8E, Sec8 (It is shown on the county map about on the section line between section 7 and 8.) d. Church Affiliation and Remarks: 30 marked and 5 unmarked graves; first known internment is said to be David Crockett Caldwell who died in wounds inflicted during the Civil War, however a marked grave of the infant Sary Dickinson Caldwell (b. and d. 1848) predates the above. Creed, Hassel, Hill and Roberts are common in this cemetery still in use. e. As regards deceased with the Fergerson surname, the following is found in remarks of the following cemeteries near Mellow Valley: Cemetery: McDaniel Chapel Remarks: Approximately 125 marked and 60 unmarked graves, first know interment: Mrs. James Hamil (1786-1827); Dawkins and Fargason are common in this cemetery still in use. Cemetery: Mellow Valley Remarks: Mellow Valley Baptist Church, established in 1899; approximately 60 graves; first know interment: James B. Miller (1873-1924; Fargason and Wood are common in this cemetery still in use. Although there is a variance in the surname spelling of Ferguson vs. Fargason, the sounding, to me, is similar. Hopefully this has supplemented the information furnished earlier and will be of further help to the person making the original inquiry. Right now I don't have my map at hand. Hassel's Gap has a cemetery and it is: Location T 20 Range 8, section 7. I looked in the Clay Co. Cemetery book and I don't find any Fergusons buried in Clay Co. Hope this might help just a litte. ==== ALCLAY Mailing List ==== Clay County Maps http://www.archives.state.al.us/maps/claymap.html http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/counties/clay.jpg

    3. Dear Houston and other Clay Co "locaters" I noticed that you mentioned Mellow Valley in your email. I have looked for Mellow Valley on Clay Co maps and cannot find it. Where is it, please? Thanks, CindyHMB At 07:54 PM 1/6/2003 -0600, Houston Taylor wrote: > Cemetery: Mellow Valley > Remarks: Mellow Valley Baptist Church, established in 1899; >approximately 60 graves; first know interment: James B. 3. Oops! Mea culpa. I meant Miller Valley. I could find Mellow Valley - where a ggg-uncle supposedly lived and died. What I cannot find is Miller Valley P.O. as listed in the 1870 Clay Co AL census. (possibly same as Beat #13 in 1880 census?) I found a Millerville - is that in Miller Valley? Thanks to those of you who kindly identified Mellow Valley for me - even though I meant to say Miller Valley!
